The first question I had is to Beverly, I believe, who began on the issue of the RRSP increase levels. Obviously, the committee supported an increase the last time around. It went up quite significantly, but I think the feeling was how far it should go up. I see that the suggestion you're making is to push the limit up to $27,000.

An IPP is an employer-sponsored, defined benefit pension plan that can be set up by and for a single person. This means that an actuary determines the level of contributions that the employer must make to ensure a stable pension income stream for the employee. Similar to an RRSP, contributions accumulate and compound within the plan sheltered from taxes. At retirement, taxes are payable on amounts withdrawn. It's important to note that funds invested in an IPP cannot be withdrawn until retirement or plan termination.

As regards its internal functioning, the PGFTU informed the mission that it was in the process of internal elections (by branch) and that if all went according to plan the elections would be completed by the end of June throughout the territories. The current closures were not conducive to the movement of persons. The mission’s interlocutors pointed out, for example, that several PGFTU members who were to have participated in discussions with the mission had been prevented from travelling to Nablus and that for the last seven months PGFTU officers in Gaza had been unable to meet their colleagues in the West Bank. The PGFTU stated that the current situation had provided it with the opportunity to show the workers what it was capable of, which had led to an increase in membership. In particular, the federation had proceeded to register unemployed workers in order to be able to provide them with the social assistance they needed. However, this increase in membership was not yet reflected in terms of union dues, the PGFTU having decided to waive the payment of dues for some 119,000 members in view of the crisis. Officials of the federation again referred to the efforts they were making, despite the circumstances, to build a genuinely democratic and independent trade union movement.

Worker Co-op Members pay dues based upon the wages paid by the worker co-op to its members, employees and/or contractors, limited by both a minimum and maximum amount of dues. This basis for dues was arrived at after much discussion. Because of the diversity of types of worker co-op businesses, basing dues on assets, or profits, or gross revenues was not considered equitable. Because wages and contract income represents a direct financial benefit which the worker co-op’s members receive through their participation in the co-op, this type of income is considered a good common yardstick upon which to assess dues. The rate is 3/20th of one percent (.15%) of the wages paid. For example, a worker co-op which has $100,000 in wages, pays $150 a year. The dues payable are limited by a minimum of $50 and a maximum of $3,000.  In the first year of membership, the dues level is a flat rate of $50.
