Let's not forget the fact that many times in our relatively short history, we've had to call upon many people serving in the forces to make many sacrifices. We still do today. These people are prepared to step forward, at any time we want them to, to fulfil these essential duties.

43. Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

The Olympic festival was held once every four years in the most hot days of the summer. During the five days of the festivals, a number of sacrifices were dedicated to the altars of the gods of Olympia, the most magnificent of all being the sacrifice of one hundred cattle in front of Zeus' altar. A series of athletic contests were held in the stadium, the hippodrome and other areas of the site in front of thousands of spectators from all cities of the known-Greek world. The victors were crowned with a wreath of wild olive and enjoyed special honours from their hometown.

The residence was located close to Margaret of Parma's palace and was contiguous to the "Hôtel de Culembourg", a nearness that was symbolic of the impossible coexistence of monarchist feelings towards Philip II, of separatist aspirations, of Catholicism and Calvinism… This impossible challenge cost Count Lamoral of Egmont his life, and caused the "Hôtel de Culembourg" to be torn down; it was on its very ruins that the convent of "Carmes déchaussés” (an order of barefoot monks) was built in the beginning of the 16th century", and it took Lamoral’s heirs many sacrifices to keep the property safe from the revenge of the occupier.

“Before me stands the incarnation of infinite, inexpressible suffering. An eternal flame burns in the center of a wide circle, perpetuating that day of horror. Facing the monument is a man, alone and weeping, trembling with emotion. He has come to pay tribute to his parents. I contemplate the symbolic image of Golgothan horror, trying not to break into tears. I had been a hair’s breadth from that icy death, my child’s heart as yet unaware of the extent of the tragedy.”

In November 2005, Ric Wellwood, the Fundraising/Communications Coordinator for the Catfish Creek Conservation Authority (CCCA), approached the Ontario Police College (OPC) with a very unique proposal. He wanted the CCCA to partner with the OPC in creating a living memorial to fallen police officers, a Path of Honour on the campus of the college. Ric Wellwood’s vision was “The Path would be a place of quiet contemplation, where cadets and staff can get away for a time to think and reflect. It would enhance the natural beauty of the campus and be a constant reminder that many sacrifices have been part of the college’s history.” Over two hundred officers are memorialized on the lobby plaques at the college. A maple tree would be planted for each fallen officer.

His arrows sundered the troops who tried to wrest the temple from him that day. However, when he returned to the village, he found that it had been reduced to a smoldering graveyard. Remorse at the sight of his slain family gave way to overwhelming regret, and then to seething hatred. He swore to slaughter every Noxian invader, but first he needed to become stronger. He turned to that which he had sacrificed everything to protect. The pit of corruption would consume him wholly, as a flame devours a wick, but its abominable power would burn within him until he was lost. This was a path from which there could be no return. With grim resolve, he condemned himself to the black flames, feeling malevolent energy bond to his skin...and with it, the promise of ruin. He left, seeking the blood of all Noxians involved with the invasion, a grisly task that eventually led him to the invasion's most infamous perpetrators.

Growth requires hustle – It’s not just about having a great idea, it about putting in 18-hour work days – consistently. Our success didn’t happen overnight, it was years and years of very hard work, very long days, and many sacrifices that even continue today. Never become complacent, even if you’ve achieved some level of success. That’s why we still put in long days and have the hardest working team in the business – we’re always asking ourselves, what’s next?

Manage your expectations. While success may appear to arrive overnight in some cases, the reality is that it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to achieve solid results.
Beardsley returned to Upper Canada, nevertheless, and opened a practice in Oakville where he had purchased land in 1847. In the spring of 1853 he was back in Woodstock for the funeral of his son Horace Homer, who had been one of the members of the New Brunswick legislature for Carleton. Though 77 years old, Beardsley was asked to complete his late son’s term, but this gesture of respect came to naught when Charles Connell* unexpectedly declared his candidacy. Defeated in the by-election, Beardsley returned to Oakville. A resident there remembered the judge, as Beardsley liked to be called, for his “fine knowledge of men and events” and his many interesting stories of bygone days in Upper Canada. He also noted that Beardsley “had some peculiar ideas which were too advanced for his time.” Beardsley remained active to the end of his life, riding on horseback to pick up his mail a day or two before his death.
