It was reported that, on October 14, 2007, four Richmond RCMP members responded to a complaint of a male acting erratically at the Vancouver International Airport. While attempting to subdue and arrest the individual, later identified as Mr. Robert Dziekanski, the members deployed a conducted energy weapon (Taser). Shortly after being taken into custody, Mr. Dziekanski went unconscious. Emergency services personnel attended; however, Mr. Dziekanski died at the scene. The RCMP assigned an Integrated Homicide Investigation Team to investigate the incident.

As a separate task of the storm selection activity therefore, a population of cyclones of tropical origin which had retained tropical characteristics upon crossing Georges Bank, was identified from all available data sources. A detailed description of the storm selection and ranking process is given in Volume I of the study report. Briefly, a total of 33 historical hurricanes were selected, and then ranked within two separate groups, representing the historical periods 1938–1956, and 1967–1987. The latter period overlaps the period used for the extratropical storms. The earlier period was included in order that the exceptional storms which occurred in 1938, 1944 and the early 1950’s would be included.

Recycling companies where the sludge could be sent were identified for each metal. Challenges to making recycling a viable option and how obstacles to recycling can be overcome were also discussed. CAMF and MGI Limited succeeded in getting six facilities involved in a detailed eco-efficiency evaluation. Many opportunities for improvement were identified and 12 facts sheets have been generated to summarize pollution prevention and energy efficiency options. Follow-up visits to the six companies will occur in winter 2005 to determine how/if recommendations have been implemented.

Datule near Barbariga covers over 400 hectares. It was declared a special paleontological reserve in 1994. Datule is the first and still the only site of the remains of dinosaur bones found on the entire Mediterranean area, as well as the only submarine site. Fossilized bones of a Sauropod, a quadrupedal herbivore dinosaur were found. During the period of the Lower Cretaceous, they were one of the biggest dinosaurs which lived on the Earth. Twelve remains from the Sauropod family have been identified to date, which gives the Datule site an international importance as it provides the real possibility for describing a completely new species. Apart from the Sauropod remains, the fossils of the marsh horsetail, a plant eaten by the herbivore dinosaur have also been found.

Dewey (2n = 14, EE genome), a wild relative of wheat, carries resistance to FHB on the long arm of its chromosome 7E (7EL). In this report, a strain of Fusarium graminearum Schwabe, the principal causal agent of FHB, transformed to produce green fluorescent protein (GFP), was used to characterize the resistance carried by 7EL when expressed in the susceptible background of 'Chinese Spring' (CS) wheat. Inoculated spikelets of the addition line CS-7EL showed less infection than those of the parental line, CS. This was associated in CS-7EL with upregulation of many genes predicted to be involved in plant defence and downregulation of genes associated with salicylic-acid-induced defence. The difference between CS and CS-7EL in the progression of infection was striking; the fungus spread easily and extensively from the inoculated spikelet into the node and adjacent spikelets in CS, but was effectively blocked from spreading in CS-7EL. Microscopic data showed that fungal growth was inhibited within the inoculated spikelet in CS-7EL, and spread was completely blocked by the node tissue. The blocking of fungal growth through the node into the rachis correlates with the deposition of an unidentified substance in CS-7EL. Additionally, longer internode segments in CS-7EL versus CS may contribute to limiting fungal spread. Our results suggest that the resistance displayed by CS-7EL is multifaceted, involving both physical and chemical factors.

The extracts of a selection of 150 foliar fungal endophytes isolated from Picea rubens (red spruce) needles were screened by LC-MS and assayed for toxicity. Three of these strains that were toxic to the forest pest Choristoneura fumiferana (eastern spruce budworm) in dietary bioassays were selected for further study. Their culture extracts were analyzed by LC-NMR spectroscopy, and the major metabolites were isolated by LC-MS-SPE or PTLC/column chromatography and characterized. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses including 2D NMR, HRMS and by comparison to literature data. Compounds 1 and 5-7 are hitherto unknown whereas compounds 2 and 3 are natural products described for the first time. Compound 4 is reported for the first time as a fungal metabolite and 8-9 were identified as known fungal metabolites in genera. The screening of fungal endophytes of Picea rubens has resulted in extracts that showed toxicity to the forest pest Choristoneura fumiferana in dietary bioassays. Isolation of the major metabolites from three of these strains has led to the discovery of four natural products; compounds 1 and 5-7.

Phase 1 identified targeted internships at the CISSS de la Gaspésie and at PSOC (programme de soutien aux organismes communautaires) organizations in the region which provide a continuum of services from the health institutions. The coordinator will help the appropriate personal at the health institution and PSOCs to organize the targeted internships identified. The coordinator will be accountable any activity that does not fall within the roles and responsibility of the health institution and PSOCs, this includes promotion of the region. The coordinator will also support the intern by helping to apply for incentive bursaries, finding lodgement, ensuring transport, etc. during their internship in the Gaspésie.
