Rockfish belong to the family Scorpaenidae (Sebastes spp.), and as a group have been identified as potential candidates for aquaculture. Sebastes species of the western Pacific are being cultured in both Korea and Japan. Considered a delicacy of Asian cuisine, rockfish have been the target of commercial and recreational fisheries. However, wild rockfish fisheries in the eastern Pacific have been in decline for years possibly due to the lucrative retail sale of live fish driving overfishing of these species. Populations of inshore rockfish are rapidly declining throughout coastal British Columbia. Conservation initiatives and fishery bans have been established to help restore depleted stocks of rockfish but this approach will require many years to be successful. However, a vibrant and active market for rockfish remains and alternative strategies are needed to fill these niches using an environmentally sustainable approach. This research project looks at the development of effective culture technology and husbandry protocols for sustainable rockfish aquaculture production in British Columbia to meet the high market demand for these fish without further depleting the natural stocks.

There is, however, a lack of transparency and accountability in the allocation of mining rights, as well as in the distribution and use of revenue from mining. In Quebec, the number of Anglophones decreased considerably, dropping from 789,000 in 1971 to 607,000 in 2006. This decrease concerns mainly those under the age of 30 (Chart 5.7). In the past 35 years, there was a significant decrease in numbers in the under-30 cohorts in 1971, who were between 35 and 64 years old in 2006, due to substantial migratory losses to the benefit of the other provinces and territories. The gains made in intergenerational linguistic mobility, which translated into a language continuity index higher than 1, could not compensate for these losses. In 2006, there was little variation in the numbers in the different age groups under age 25, partly because the LRI for English mother tongues is usually slightly more than 170 children per 100 women. However, we note a significant decrease in the numbers of 10-14 to 0-4 year olds, a decrease similar to that for the age groups in which we find a large number of their mothers, that is, the 40-44 to 30-34 year-olds.

Also, for the first time, the Canadian Study reports on whether purchase price adjustment provisions require the adjustment amount to exceed a threshold before it is paid – with most deals not including such a requirement, there appears to be little difference between US and Canadian practice on this deal point.[5] Finally, one of the more significant differences with the US Study is that Canadian deals are far less likely to have a purchase price adjustment provision that includes a preliminary adjustment of the purchase price on the closing date or that excludes tax-related items from the working capital calculation.

The effect of harvesting and slash piling on soil respiration, temperature and moisture was examined in a balsam fir (Abies balsamea) and a black spruce (Picea mariana) forest located in western Newfoundland, Canada, 2 mo to 2.5 yr following harvesting. Within 4 mo of harvesting, soil temperature, moisture, and soil respiration rates were affected by harvesting and slash piling. Clearcut areas without slash (CC-S) had significantly lower soil respiration rates than uncut forests (F). However, clearcut areas with slash cover (CC+S) had significantly higher soil respiration rates than CC-S. When harvested areas with and without slash were combined, harvesting decreased soil respiration in the black spruce forest but had no effect on soil respiration in the balsam fir forest. Harvesting increased soil temperatures at 10 cm, however CC+S temperatures were cooler than CC-S temperatures. Harvested areas tended to dry faster than F, although soil moisture levels at >3.5 cm were not significantly depleted. However, there was evidence of soil drying at <3.5 cm. Soil temperature (at 10 cm) at the time of measurement was most strongly correlated to rates of soil respiration. Temporal variability and treatment effects (harvesting and slash piling) played a minor role in explaining soil respiration rates when variations in soil respiration were adjusted for 10-cm soil temperature. Soil moisture levels (3.5–9.5 cm. depth), which did not vary widely, also played a minor role in explaining soil respiration rates.
