The earth materials in the Whitehorse valley tell the geological story from 250 million years ago to the present. The nearby mountains represent ancient limestone reefs, river deposits, granite magmas, and lavas. Glaciers and streams carved valleys and deposited sediment across the landscape; the Yukon River continues to wash away the sediment. Landslides displace rock and soil. Waters dissolve, transport, and deposit minerals, both at and below the Earth's surface.

Malawi faced serious macroeconomic challenges in 2011 and 2012. These were the result of inappropriate policies, which led to a growing fiscal deficit, rising inflation and the depletion of international gross reserves in a context of an overvalued exchange rate. The government, which came to power in April 2012 under the leadership of President Joyce Banda following the death of Bingu Wa Mutharika, has instituted bold macroeconomic policy adjustment measures to address the imbalances. These measures include the devaluation of the Malawian kwacha (MKW) by 49%, with a move towards a flexible exchange rate regime, a tightening of monetary and fiscal policy and a removal of subsidies on fuel. The government has also re-engaged with the IMF, resulting in the resumption of direct budget support by donors. These reforms have started yielding results, as evidenced by the easing of fuel shortages and improved access to foreign exchange by the business community. Economic recovery, however, is fragile and the exchange rate may take time to stabilise given the excess demand for foreign exchange. The government’s second national development plan, the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy II (MGDS II, 2011-2016), was officially launched in September 2012 along with the Economic Recovery Plan (ERP). The latter aims to achieve economic recovery and mitigate the impact of the reforms on vulnerable citizens through immediate and short-term reforms and interventions to restore macroeconomic stability and re-prioritise expenditures toward sectors with the potential to boost economic growth and export earnings. These include agriculture, mining, energy, transport and tourism.

What started out as a relaxed tour suddenly became very demanding due to sudden fog and the high numbers taking part. However, the mountain guides from the Mammut Alpine School did a great job of managing the proceedings and keeping everything on schedule. In the words of one participant: “The sun was shining, I sent a text message and when I looked up 2 minutes later I couldn’t see a thing.” To protect themselves from the wind, the participants dug snow trenches. This gave them an activity to focus on as well as protection. In some trenches wine and Tyrol specialities were on hand to lift spirits. After waiting around for almost three hours, the mountain guides decided to call it a day. In an atmosphere of general disappointment, everyone started to get ready for the descent. However, at that precise moment, the sun started to break through. The participants immediately took up the chant: “Photo, photo, photo …” After a brief discussion, Röbi took over and the arrow was created in record time – in the bag!

4 The appellants were confident in their farming abilities, and continued to believe that an extraneous factor was responsible for their difficulties. In 1989, they began making inquiries of their neighbours with respect to the farm. As a result of these inquiries, they learned about the buried asphalt. They immediately suspected that the asphalt might be the root cause of their troubles. The appellants set out to gather scientific evidence to substantiate their suspicions, and they also attempted to remedy their water problems. They drilled a second well as far from the asphalt as possible, stopped drinking the well water, and hired independent consultants to conduct tests on their water and on animals that had died. Apparently acting pursuant to existing policies, the MOE constructed an underground water tank on the farm, and paid for water to be trucked in until it had completed further testing of the ground water. This round of MOE testing once again found that all contaminants were within acceptable limits, and the MOE eventually discontinued paying for water to be trucked to the farm. The consultants hired by the appellants, however, found additional contaminants in the water and, by 1993, claim to have linked these contaminants to the health problems of the cattle.

Finally, some also argue that trade has been responsible for the observed widening of the gap in the wages of skilled and unskilled workers in industrial countries. However, much of this gap can be explained by skill-biased technological change rather than by trade. Skill-biased technological change refers to improvements in technology, such as the information technology revolution, which increased demand for skilled workers relative to unskilled workers. In the United States, this technological change combined with the slowdown in the relative supply of college-equivalent workers led to the expansion of wage differentials between skilled and unskilled workers. While industrial countries have experienced greater trade openness during the same period, trade has not played a big role in rising wage inequality. Empirical studies that have attempted to measure the contribution that trade has made to inequality give estimates of only between 4% and 11% to 15%.

The carmine bee-eater parents dug the nest holes themselves using their slightly curved beaks, which are around five centimetres long. In the wild, a pair will dig two or three nest holes, preferably in steep, sandy riverbanks. Perfectly located breeding colonies in Africa contain several thousand holes. Once the holes are finished, the creators critically examine their microclimatic conditions. Carmine bee-eaters like to have a hole with a temperature of around 25°C and 65% humidity for brooding and rearing young, so they select the hole that is closest to meeting these requirements.

The ancient Appalachian Mountains form the backbone of this region. These worn, plateau-like flat-topped mountains, many with summits over 900 metres, compose the most spectacular, accessible mountain scenery in Canada east of the Rockies. The peaks are barren and covered with broken shale. Mount Jacques Cartier is the highest, at 1320 metres. Rivers have cut deep gorges through these ranges, widened during the most recent glaciation into magnificent U-shaped valleys. At the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula, the mountains meet the sea in a series of spectacular multi-hued cliffs and plunging headlands.

For more than a century, the miners of Asbestos excavated a huge asbestos mine. Paradoxically, this gigantic “hole” gobbled up entire sections of the town as it grew. LC and JGL examined the open-pit mine by staying there for four days and three nights, in a trailer right at the bottom of the pit. Their approach to this crater – two kilometres wide and 370 metres deep – took the form of total immersion, living in and exploring an outsize environment to produce never before seen images. Today, the depth of the pit captured in these images has been reduced by rising water levels since the mine was put out of service soon after the artists’ intervention.

Inside the tunnels, masses of optical fiber cables and wire bundles are strung along the walls, leaving only enough space for one person to pass. Fiber optics have become a key element in telecommunications in Japan, and underground tunnels help ensure uninterrupted service.
