You will notice that Slovaks are much less assertive and confident than Westerners. Being assertive and self-confident is sometimes perceived as being self-centred. Slovaks have difficulties with "selling themselves" although they have a lot to offer.

Security is essential for belonging too. Crime is on the decline in Canada and most people feel safe where they live, however systemic racism and a lack of public services that are culturally safe still leave many without a sense of security. More than one in five Canadians report being a victim of discrimination in the last five years. Meanwhile visible minorities and Indigenous Peoples both have less faith in public services such as police to protect them.

Community groups also had relatively flexible approaches to service delivery. They argued that models had to be accessible, accountable, confidential, effective, local, and affordable. Some suggested full-service, one-stop service centres. One submission argued that lawyers should be connected to shelters. The Thunder Bay Indian Friendship Centre submitted that more lawyers should be put on salary through the Plan in order to provide clients with consistent and expert service with respect to the various issues that confront the Aboriginal community. Another submission argued that Aboriginal people should operate their own legal aid commissions. While many submissions supported a continuation of the certificate side, especially in the areas of criminal and family law where the issue of client choice was considered important, they also suggested expanding duty counsel, more utilization of paralegals, expanding clinics, and problem-solving in more interdisciplinary ways.

The 2014 Canadian Financial Capability Survey (the Survey) found that only 15% of women and 22% of men correctly answered five key financial literacy questions related to interest, inflation and risk diversification. The Survey found that there is a gender gap in the level of financial knowledge and financial confidence of women as compared to men with women having lower financial knowledge, and less likely to consider themselves “financially knowledgeable” (31% versus 43%). Gender differences in financial knowledge were more pronounced among older Canadians, among the university-educated and among higher income workers. For example, university-educated men did better on tests of financial knowledge than their female counterparts by 13%. The Survey also found that when couples share the responsibility for the long-term financial management of the household or where women’s contribution is similar to that of their male partner or goes beyond parity, there is no gender difference in financial knowledge.

Like citizens in many other established democracies, Canadians have become steadily more critical over the past four decades of their political leaders, their government institutions and even their system of democracy. We know this mainly from public opinion surveys of various kinds, but declining turnouts in elections and reduced participation in other activities, such as membership in political parties, are also taken as indicators of disillusionment with politics and governments. Canadians regularly tell pollsters that they have less trust in their politicians, identify less with political parties, have less confidence in the main institutions of government and express less satisfaction with how democracy operates in this country, believing that government is run for the benefit of a few big interests. Despite these negative sentiments, national pride and support for the principles of Canadian democracy remain high, with two thirds of citizens usually saying that Canada has the best democracy in the world.[13]
