A recovery strategy is currently being developed for this population. Sadly, at this point, it is unclear if anything can be done to recover the Atlantic population of this species.

The results of the introduction of the Montana badgers have been encouraging-the animals have adapted well to their new home and are producing young. Translocated animals could help in restoring the population in the northern part of the study area.

Planted with indigenous aquatic plants, a floating island can be an important seed source for re-establishing wetland plants once a region has been disturbed. Specially selected plants can grow quickly, receiving the perfect amount of water, nutrients, sunlight without competition that can be found on land.

This recovery strategy is the latest of many efforts made since 1983 to restore the beluga population in the St. Lawrence Estuary. The commitment and collaboration of all those who participate in the recommendations' implementation is essential to achieving the objectives.

Each summer, researcher Arnaud Béchet, along with professional banders like Benjamin Vollot, set out to band the chicks they locate in the nesting grounds of Îlot de Fangassier. This small island, constructed in the 1970s to support flamingo breeding, has helped to rebuild pink flamingo populations. Females lay their eggs here, and the nesting grounds teem with thousands of flamingos. Apart from pink flamingos, several other species are found at Pont de Gau, including herons, storks, egrets, teals, raptors, passerines and other small wading birds.

We report on the first capture of the southern red-backed vole (Clethrionomys gapperi), the eleventh non-native terrestrial mammal established on the island of Newfoundalnd over the last 150 years. Red-backed voles may have been accidentally introduced by unknown sources in pulpwood imports or may have been deliberately introduced in an attempt to augment the depauperate small mammal fauna as a vigilante recovery effort for the endangered Newfoundland marten (Martes americana atrata). We anticipate significant utilization of the red-backed vole as prey by both Newfoundland marten and red fox (Vulpes vulpes) with associated demographic responses within and between these species. Red-backed voles will likely change habitat utilization patterns for the endemic subspecies of meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus terraenovae.

The long-term goal for the species will be to restore the population to a favourable conservation status and workshop participants agreed that in the short term - within the next 10 years – the population should be stabilized at least at the current level. In addition, participants agreed to divide the Taiga Bean Goose population into four sub-populations or management units based on their clearly distinct breeding areas: Western (West Sweden, North-Western Denmark, Norway, United Kingdom), Central (Russia (Karelia), Finland, Sweden, Northern Norway, Eastern Denmark), Eastern 1 (Russia (W Siberia), Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands in cold winters) and Eastern 2 (Russia, Kazakhstan, North-Western China, East Kirgizstan).

There are several national and international organizations which serve to make recommendations on the conservation of shark populations. As a country, Canada subscribes to FAO's International Plan of Action on Sharks and Rays. Canada released its National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks in 2007, although it has been applying the same shark conservation principles for many years. The 2012 Progress Report on the National Plan of Action summarizes the current status of shark conservation efforts in Canada. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) reviews the population status of potentially endangered wildlife in Canada, then categorizes each population in terms of its relative abundance or health. These recommendations are then passed onto the Canadian government for possible action under the Species at Risk Act (SARA). If the population or species is listed under SARA, strict measures must be taken to aid in the conservation of the species. However, the government may elect not to list a species under SARA, even though it is listed under COSEWIC. In such a case, measures to protect the species and increase abundance are taken under existing, non-SARA measures.
