You need to look at the kinds of things being explored in communities like Prince Albert in Saskatchewan, where they have done some really innovative work bringing together various agencies—policing, mental health, social services, and others—to look at a holistic approach to dealing with some of those challenges, recognizing that there is really only one taxpayer across all the jurisdictions and asking how we can more effectively deal with the challenges we face in our communities, with the limited resources we have.

The construction, expansion and rebuilding of hydroelectric plants is controversial, and brings a number of different interests into collision with each other. WSL developed this diagram during a workshop attended by various experts from Switzerland and Austria. It shows which areas of our environment, economy and society are affected by the use of hydropower and pumped storage, and looks at factors that influence the use of hydropower. Alongside the potential risk of conflict, this form of renewable energy also presents a large number of opportunities.

In particular, it was a dramatic demonstration of the importance of the rapid appraisal / stakeholder exchange methodology co-developed by CIL and CIDA, and of how this method can support rapid whole system assessment and change in a culturally complex multi-stakeholder environment."
