At the UN General Assembly on 25 October 2013, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier De Schutter, presented his report, ‘Assessing a decade of right to food progress’. The report documents the multiple contributions of various actors across Africa towards securing the right to food, including governments, courts, civil society, etc. The Rapporteur highlights the case of South Africa, where the court has ordered a revision of the Marine Living Resources Act to accommodate the rights of small-scale fishers, and to ensure equitable access to marine resources for those fishers, recognising the importance of small-scale fisheries’ contribution to food security and as safety net against poverty. He also stressed that the African Union is sending an important signal by proclaiming 2014 as the ‘Year of Agriculture and Food Security’.

The legislative amendment project “Swissness” envisions the creation of a national register for geographical indications for non-agricultural categories of goods. Today, the option of registering exists only for agricultural products and processed agricultural products (the corresponding indications of source and geographical indications can be registered with the Federal Office of Agriculture) and for wine (responsibility for this registration is with the cantons). An identical possibility has been planned for forestry products and processed forestry products (which are the object of a forest law revision project). This new possibility allows for official recognition of the protection granted to geographical indications for all products, which is demanded by many foreign countries as a condition for protection in their own territory.
