Queen Anne Revival buildings are an important part of our Canadian architectural heritage. As we can see, the Queen Anne Revival style moved away from the sober classical decoration of earlier eras and instead promoted more flexible natural designs such as sunbursts and flower patterns, and the houses were either painted vibrant colours or had richly hued brickwork to emphasize the ornate details and textures. The style is filled with exuberance, variation and asymmetry. Though it fell out of fashion after 1914, it is worth noting that most of the original buildings have endured, and the style has again grown in popularity, even to the point where new houses in modern subdivisions are being constructed with a nod to Queen Anne Revival's more whimsical features. There are hundreds of designated Queen Anne Revival buildings on the Canadian Register of Historic Places, and as part of our cultural heritage, they help reflect Canada's hopeful and joyful expansion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Directorate of Public Works of the Wilaya of Tipasa entrusted the study for this project to the Laboratory for Maritime Studies. The detailed and illustrated report presents the first two phases of development works: the preliminary study and summary pilot project. Two development scenarios, a grid plan and an open spiral plan were studied and presented. The project management retained the grid plan. This plan, the implementation of which is estimated at more than USD 6 million, defines six components: the marina, the fishing port, the landscaped park, the ancient garden which is the extension of Tipasa Museum, the esplanade of the port, and the cliff garden. The landscaping provides a link between the two historic sites. In the context of this study a diagnosis and a summary pilot project for the protection of the cliff were produced and attached to the report. Several variants of protective works were considered, but the solution retained is not specified.

Archaeological sites constitute a major archive of the world and often the last tangible evidence of lifestyles or even entire cultures. Yet, in most cases they are often an invisible and often unexpected part of our heritage. They are very vulnerable to modern or intensive agricultural practices, urban sprawl, transportation or power dam projects as well as construction such as underground car parks. In the case of many exposed sites, their maintenance, safety protection and interpretation do not receive adequate resources which threatens the integrity of the place and objects related to it. Additional threats of looting affect particularly underwater heritage, as treasure hunting is facilitated by new technologies and markets, in the context of insufficient international and national legislation.

We need to stop concentrating on a chronological account of the phases of the conflict and focus on highlighting its major features: its total aspect and the brutality in human relationships that it brought about. This will allow an understanding, beyond the more immediate consequences of the war, which are studied as part of the outcome of the war, and its profound and traumatic effect on the century which was beginning.  The notion of brutalisation (a poor translation of the English term "brutalization" that would be better understood by the use of the neologism "ensavagery") reflects the fundamental role of violence in war. Recent research has highlighted this violence which was part of a conflict infamous for being the context for the first case of genocide of the century, that of the Armenians, and which, for the first time in Europe, saw the emergence of concentration camps; this practice, which all warring parties inflicted upon the nationals of enemy countries, extended to entire population groups (such as these French men and above all French women from the region around Lille who were deported to Eastern Prussia). Even though the extermination of Jews and Gypsies was not a direct consequence of the First World War, certain human beings who lived through this conflict became capable of carrying out an evil will to exterminate: on two occasions, in 1931 and in 1939, Hitler used the deportation of Armenians as a means of justifying his anti-Semite policy. Therefore the conflict has to be seen in its dimension of a founding source of total (totalitarian?) violence which was to have a profound effect on the 20th century.
