He was an influential freemason, and a lodge bearing his name was founded in the 1870s.

Among the matters which judges must take care to avoid is any political element – on any side. In Lebanon, as in every civilized state, politics is rightly a matter of great public interest and importance - for citizens. But not for judges. Politics has nothing to do with the Tribunal, which has no interest in anything beyond the scope of its jurisdiction, the law and the evidence. Our role does not extend to politics here any more than in my own country where, for the past 18 years, as a member of the judicial branch of government I have declined to vote at political elections. That is because the government, controlled by the political parties which together have received the greatest support from electors, is a litigant on one side or another in over half of our major cases. I take the view that to be a supporter or opponent of the government could distract me from my judicial task of eschewing politics and sticking solely to law. I am determined to abide by this principle throughout my period as a judge, whether at national or international level.

The Prints and Drawings Department is quite a find for anyone seeking pictorial material, the ideal complement to printed texts. Here you will find iconographic documents on Swiss geography and customs, on cultural and political themes, and, in particular, printed graphics dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries and photographs ranging from Daguerreotypes to current agency and independent photographs. In both the prints and photography, the accent is on views of the Swiss Landscape and portraits of famous Swiss personalities. The Gugelmann Collection is particularly outstanding. This is an exceptional collection of picture series, albums and oil paintings by lesser Swiss masters from the second half of the 18th century.
