Participants mentioned first-aid training several times, noting that this framework is a good way of training drivers on safety issues. They cautioned that first-aid training could easily become a catch-all in which bus safety rules become lost. It seems that many passengers have allergies, and it was suggested that drivers be prepared to cope with emergencies involving allergies, by adding these skills to first-aid training. This implies, of course, that the parents must provide the school authorities with the necessary information. First-aid training could also include ways of making school bus drivers aware of the dangers of routine. One participant noted that the worst enemy of drivers is routine, and that ways must be found to make drivers aware that they are carrying very young passengers who often display unpredictable behaviour. It was felt that bus companies must remind drivers of this regularly.

I will conclude by saying that following the strike of the ADM Ogilvie workers, CNTU believes there are sufficient grounds to demand that Parliament make the necessary provisions to return mills to provincial jurisdiction. This does not require any tiresome constitutional amendments. Parliament need only amend its legislation on wheat and delete any reference to flour mills. It could even proceed on a province-by-province basis if it wished, as it did in the case of milling operations. We are now well aware of the difference between milling operations and mills. It did so in the case of mills, in other words of workers who are directly involved with wheat. The government of Quebec would then merely have to accept flour mills under its jurisdiction while ensuring the continuity of current collective agreements.

costs of substance abuse, represent more meaningful estimates of potential public policy benefits of interventions. They can, therefore, represent a very useful tool in putting the case for the allocation or greater public resources to drug programs. As an example, Appendix G presents the steps which researchers might have to take when attempting to estimate the value of the social benefits (that is, the reduction in social costs) which would result from a specified reduction in substance abuse, for example a specified reduction in smoking prevalence.

Throughout week, workers are holding alternative AGM meetings to demand that STMicroelectronics use its profits to support its employees, not shareholders. The actions take place amid a public outcry of the company’s mass firings of workers and just a few days before the AGM on May 25 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

In Europe, the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE) - EI European Region established a Task Force on ECE, which developed an ECE policy. The policy was ratified by the Pan–European Conference in 2006, the region and its member organizations commit themselves to advocate for ECE to be a priority on the policy agendas of local authorities, governments and intergovernmental bodies and to promote ECE that is publicly funded and universally accessible. The ETUCE also organises seminars and conferences on the subject and meets regularly to monitor its evolution so as to develop policies and appropriate responses.
