The theme of the recent CTF Women’s Issues Symposium held April 17-19 in Ottawa dovetailed with that of this year’s session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) held in New York in March. (More on that later in this article.)

Another highly important issue to consider is whether the group of young participants should be representative of all young people in, let’s say, your municipality. Having a representatively balanced group of young people participating in your project will make the results more politically legitimate. In most cases, decision-makers are more likely to take your results seriously if you are able to say that they represent the voices of young people in their municipality. Representativeness is an important building block in democracy. However, aiming for representativeness puts demands on your recruitment process. More on this later!*

There are few demographic variations in overall, combined aided and unaided awareness of the flyer. The exception is those 18 to 34 years of age, among whom awareness is at 38 percent. Regionally, Albertans (42%) are the least likely to recall the flyer. No differences exist between urban and rural residents. The single largest difference in recall, though, is between those who report having voted and those who report that they did not (52% to 37%). As noted earlier, and as will be further reviewed later in the report, this is likely a factor of engagement and interest in the election and politics generally.

In the sense of the state of the art of conveyancing today, both the plan and the terminology used in its execution seem vague and incomplete. For example, neither in the first years of the development nor in the second era (after the conveyance of the residual lands to the trustee as aforesaid) was any provision made for either the form or the funding of the permanent retention of the non-residential area (the ‘Foreshore Reserves’ blocks) by any entity private or public. Nor indeed was there any provision relating to the dedication of any lands, other than those already dedicated in the street patterns shown on Plan 2200, to the public through any municipal agency. Neither was there any express reference in the standard form of conveyance used in the sale of lands in the Crescent Beach development, to any intention on the part of the developer to dedicate or maintain the ‘Foreshore Reserves’ for the use of the purchasers of residential lots, including the appellant, in the future. There is, of course, the strongest implication or inference that such is indeed an inherent part of the conveyancing plan, but this issue will be discussed later.
