An infrared radiation temperature study was carried out at an experimental cowshed (120 cows) using a thermal image scanner. The temperature distribution pattern was estimated and analysed with SmartView software: particularly udder, feet and areas with skin injuries. The radiation temperature of healthy udder did not change considerably after milking. Automatic monitoring of udder temperature is possible not only in milking parlours or milking robots but also elsewhere. The udder thermograms enable assessment of milking hygiene, as the cleanliness of udder surface influences average temperature. The temperature of legs was lowest at the hooves and highest at the coronary band. Temperature differences may be used for estimation of leg disorders. Thermal images can help detect skin injuries. Radiation temperature of injured and depilous locations was higher by several degrees than their surroundings. (Agronomy Research, 2012)

The study results showed that although all segments of the agricultural industry have adopted relevant technologies, the penetration of the technologies varies by segment. Most greenhouse operations rely on digital climate control technology and other high tech sensors for increasing productivity. In the dairy and cattle industries, RFID (radio frequency identification) tags are used for traceability and tracking activities, reproductive timing and herd health, and provide time savings for the farmer. Robotic milking machines for dairy also present productivity improvement opportunities for larger operations. Although BC has one of the largest blueberry industries in the world, for now few digital technologies are used in production.

Cows in automated milking systems with free access to feeders sometimes show a reduced use of the robotic milkers, while forced traffic where cows have to pass through the robot to reach the feeders may reduce feeding time and frequency. We examined two groups of 35 lactating cows. For 21 d, one group had free access to feeders, while the other group had to pass through the robot to reach feed. For a subsequent 21 d period, the treatments were reversed. The behaviour of the cows was observed for 3 periods of 24 h using 10 min scan sampling. Milking data were obtained from the robot milkers. The average number of visits to the robot, either with or without milking, did not differ between the two types of traffic. On average cows lay down for 12.3 h/d, with no significant difference between free and forced traffic. The type of traffic did not affect the duration of time spent in the feeding area. With both forced and free traffic, there was marked diurnal variation in feeding, with relatively little feeding occurring between 2200 h and 0800 h. Use of forced traffic did not reduce feeding time. It did not improve access to the robot milker or eliminate diurnal variation. Differences between cows in visits to the robot may reflect differences in their motivation to rest and eat concentrates.

In January 2002, 11 Ontario Lely robotic milking herds cooperated in a field study examining feeding management factors contributing to voluntary attendance at the milking box. These producers provided daily records for three consecutive days, of all events in which the operator moved cows to the robot for milking. Data collected included time of day, cow ID and the reason for the action. The analyses and composition of the pelleted concentrate and of the bunk fed ration were also recorded. Records of all visits to the milking boxes were downloaded from the backup files on the farm computer. The authors gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Lely Canada in formatting this information. One herd was eliminated due to errors in the computer records. For 10 herds the records were examined for the frequency with which cows were moved to the robot by the operator, defined as "involuntary milking" by "involuntary" cows vs. the frequency of voluntary milking.

Claire's involvement was one of the key factors that enabled the operation to double its production capacity. In 2002, the company was one of the first in Quebec to obtain HACCP pre-certification and La Ferme Pittet was one of the first dairies in the province to use robotic milking machines. Ferme Pittet keeps the safety and health of its employees top of mind. The year the UPA set up its Mutuelle de prévention, a select group of companies with distinguished safety records, Ferme Pittet embraced the opportunity to become a member of the Mutuelle and Claire is responsible for its continued involvement.
