(Burkina – Emine) – Ouagadougou July 26, 2016: Burkina Faso is, recently named among the mining countries but most of Burkina Faso peoples believe that the exploitation of the country’s natural resources does not give them what they deserve. This led the leaders during the Transition in 2015 to review the country’s mining code calling mining companies for more responsibility. But this does not seem satisfactory so that some people still call for a new revision of the mining code. This led the Read more »

Following the routes of the Phoenicians along the wine road, we enjoy the sun, the salt, in a verdant valley Sossio, where the only sound is silence. A place whose soundtrack is the croaking of frogs in the pond, the chirping of cicadas, the chirping of colorful finches and nightingales, or the blink of butterfly wings. Your eyes will be captured by the green rocks in the red pomegranates, elegant explosion of yellow and red hibiscus, lantana from light of the small intestine, from the beautiful flowers of stephanotis, fleshy fruit as martorana and thousands and thousands of prickly pear that peep color between the cladodes. The intense scent of jasmine white sun-kissed summer inebriate your senses, as in the cold January spectacle of the almond blossom in you awaken the enthusiasm of the spring. In the undergrowth, with a bit of luck, you can watch the race of rabbits, hedgehogs and porcupines go slow or peeping out of the now rare lizard from the beautiful bright colors.

The Precambrian Canadian Shield consists of very old, resistant rocks that range in age from 570 million to more than 3 billion years old. The rocks of the Canadian Shield consist of crystalline igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks that have had a complex history of volcanic eruptions, mountain building, faulting, deformation, burial, uplift, weathering and erosion. These rocks contain the majority of Ontario’s metallic mineral deposits in areas known as “greenstone belts” because they are dominantly composed of green or gray volcanic and sedimentary rocks.

It contains a system of gold and zinc bearing quartz veins hosted in volcanites from the Wabamisk formation. These veins are 2 to 4 meters wide and were identified on a strike of 5 km. A surface sampling returned grades of up to 0.7 g/t Au and 1.08% Zn.

Mark Heyck, Mayor of Yellowknife, N.W.T., notes that the city was thrilled to have part of another planet named in their honour. "The naming of the Yellowknife quadrant in Gale Crater and the geologically interesting place now known as Yellowknife Bay, Mars, is a distinguished recognition that honours the history and spirit of our community, as well as the ancient geology of the Yellowknife Greenstone Belt," said Heyck. "As new discoveries are made, we welcome the opportunity to continue this celebration of exploration, discovery and the frontier spirit – a celebration that extends from one world to another."

Comoé National Park is one of the rare zones in West Africa that has maintained its ecological integrity. The property is sufficiently vast to guarantee the ecological integrity of the species that it contains, on the condition, however, that poaching is reduced. The boundaries have been clearly established and defined to include the watersheds or ecosystems in their entirety. However, if the boundaries were extended to the Mounts Gorowi and Kongoli, the ecological value of the property would be greatly increased, as this area could provide the elephants with a particularly suitable habitat and also enable the protection of other important species. The World Heritage Committee has, therefore, recommended to the State Party to extend the south-west part of the Park to include the Mounts Gorowi and Kongoli.

McGill Earth and Planetary Sciences researchers Jonathan O'Neil, Ph.D. candidate, and professor Don Francis, were singled out for their discovery of Earth's oldest rocks, found in the Nuvvuagittuq greenstone belt located in Northern Quebec. The researchers used an isotopic tracer to obtain an age of 4.28 billion years for an unusual amphibolite comprised in the belt, making it 250 million years more ancient than any previously discovered terrestrial rocks. The findings offer scientists clues to the earliest stages of our planet's evolution. The rocks are significant not only for their great age but for their chemical composition which gives an unprecedented glimpse of the processes that formed Earth's early crust. "I'm really interested in how the Earth was created, and with these rocks, present very shortly after the Earth’s birth, we can begin to understand how the first crust formed on our planet."
