In 1998, the electorate voted in favour of the phased NRLA. With their acceptance of the Heavy Vehicle Tax (HVT), as well as the proposal for modernization of the railways (FinöV), the Swiss people finally cleared the way for construction of the New Rail Link through the Alps. The tendering process for the construction work on the Amsteg, Sedrun, Faido and Bodio sections can begin.
