Most concerning, perhaps, is that Canadian TPP negotiators fully conceded to a US demand that prevented online broadcasters (such as Netflix) from ever being subject to Canadian content regulations. A similar demand could be brought forward in a NAFTA renegotiation. Such a move would be disastrous for Canadian culture over the long term, as broadcast television continues to migrate to online platforms.

As you head north along this photographer’s dream of a road, much of which hugs the slopes of the Green Mountain National Forest. Look out for Vermont’s best known landmarks, covered bridges, many of which date back to the early 1800s.

David Patterson is a research biologist and head of the Environmental Watch program. The program evaluates the impact of different environmental factors on migration success of Pacific salmon in fresh water. A specific example is the evaluation of adverse main stem Fraser River water temperatures and flow on adult sockeye migration success. David provides pre-season and in-season scientific advice to fisheries managers to assist in the prediction of en route loss and pre-spawning mortalities associated with adverse river conditions. The advice is based on a combination of environmental forecasts, ecological modeling and salmon migration research. The biological research seeks to better understand the relationships between freshwater migration conditions and salmon reproductive development, stress response, disease, energy utilization, and homeostasis. Current research projects and interests include: salmon carcass behaviour; reproductive physiology of adult migrators; thermal tolerance and disease progression; interannual variation in energy status of returning sockeye; causes of pre-spawning mortality; post-release stress from fishing; sockeye thermal ecology; climate impacts on migration conditions; smolt condition during freshwater migration; fry out-migration behaviour; and the intergenerational consequences of harsh migration conditions on egg-fry survival and offspring fitness.

We don't have a sealing industry here on the lower north shore. We see that in the lower north shore when seals migrate here to the gulf and they go on to the Labrador, they pass right along our shoreline. While Newfoundland fishermen, good for them, are able to harvest the seals, we can't harvest the seals because we can't move them. We can't move them out of this area, because of transportation problems.

All char spend their early lives in freshwater and it appears that a combination of conditions play a role in determining whether or not a fish will leave for the sea. Although it is believed that some of the Quttinirpaaq char are anadromous, it has yet to be confirmed. The life histories of anadromous and nonanadromous arctic char are very different since the anadromous char can access the richer food resources of the ocean. Nonanadromous char are smaller than anadromous char due to slower growth rates, and are highly parasitized.

With technological advances, it transcends national boundaries faster than physical capital and people. This makes knowledge and economies based on knowledge production global in their orientation, scope and operation. With globalization and cross-national trade, the production of knowledge itself has become a process dependent on market forces. Consequently, the products of institutions producing knowledge became a commodity to be traded as part of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). Trade in higher education attracts capital investment, invites competition, produces a profit that is sometimes higher than in other sectors and globalizes higher education.

The European eel is a species listed on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species since 2008. Indeed, global stock of European eel populations has been declining continuously over the last decades, and this decline is particularly alarming since the aquaculture for this species is still not self-sustained and relies entirely on glass eel stocks. One of the reasons for the difficulty to reproduce this species in captivity is that, at silver stage, this fish remains blocked at prepuberty as long as its reproductive oceanic migration does not occur. My researches aim at finding new actors of the reproductive axis (gonadotropic axis) and/or factors able to activate this axis, in order to propose innovative protocols to induce sexual maturity. The ultimate aim of theses studies is to participate in the establishment of a self-sustained aquaculture.
