The Institut Gustave-Roussy at Villejuif, the first European cancer research centre, is the centre of gravity of the Sciences and Health cluster in the Grand Parc Campus. It is also the site chosen for the future Grand Paris Express public transport hub, at the intersection of two lines. Traversed by the A6 motorway, it will therefore become a residential, commercial, service industry, health care, research and education hub integrated into green spaces, existing parks and the future green belt. The aim of the Campus Grand Parc urban planning study is to highlight the landscape qualities of the place and its topography. The creation of new roads to channel traffic fluxes heightens the project’s intercommunity dimension.

Structural transformation in Seychelles is complicated by its geographical position, topography and small population. The country is composed of 115 islands covering a wide geographical area in the Indian Ocean. Natural resources, land space,1 arable land and fresh-water resources are all limited. The main natural resource exploited on a large scale is fish, from the wide expanse of ocean. The fisheries are the most important export sector and account for over 80% of export revenues, although it only represents about 11% of formal employment. The country has also exploited its land and water surfaces, to promote land-based (hotels, resorts and private housing) and sea-based (fishing, diving, and snorkeling) tourism. While tourism is the main employer in the country; there has been limited diversification and insufficient product differentiation making the sector vulnerable to competition. The country aims to promote eco-tourism and cultural distinction further in order to diversify the sector. Oil and gas exploration which have been underway for over 30 years are finally bearing fruit with the setting up of Petro Seychelles in 2012, to oversee the promotion and supervision of exploration. It is expected that one of the two international companies that have identified commercially viable sites will drill its first well later in 2013, with the other companies following in 2014. If oil deposits are found to be commercially viable, production may take another 6 years to come on stream.

We need to focus research and development efforts on finding ways for these communities to escape poverty. One good example of such an effort comes from the Indian state of Nagaland, where IDRC began working in 1995 in collaboration with CIDA. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Nagaland is remote and isolated. Although the state has historically been food secure, rapid population growth has given rise to concerns about food and income security. The original Green Revolution did not reach Nagaland because its topography is not conducive to the high-yield rice varieties that were developed with flat lowlands in mind. Instead, Naga farmers continued to grow the hundreds of local rice varieties that are well adapted to their hilly and cold conditions.

The programme promotes the holistic integration of structural measures such as river improvement schemes (e.g. levees, channel improvement, dredging, floodway construction, etc.) and non-structural measures, such as controlling basin land development, the creation of a warning system, the establishment of a community flood fighting corps and the dissemination of flood hazard maps. Yet despite these measures, the flooding of a number of small rivers in 2004 caused a reported 275 deaths and about US$ 17 billion in damage. As a response, the Flood Fighting Act was revised in 2005 to expand the scope of flood forecasting activities to include smaller rivers in order to promote a more responsive and timely emergency evacuation. The amended act also aims to improve already existing flood forecast systems to disseminate information necessary for ensuring a smooth evacuation operation.

Canada's size, diverse geography, and population distribution pose important and costly challenges for the delivery of CBSA passenger clearance services. Every community located near the Canada-United States border could argue that these services are necessary to support regional economic development. The CBSA recognizes the importance of economic development; however, it must carefully weigh and consider all requests for service with a focus on security and cost effectiveness in a way that benefits the greatest possible number of citizens.

With Saskatchewan artists and Saskatchewan work, I find that certainly in terms of the artworks, and the artists that work out of Regina, there’s a certain amount of regionalism that goes along with Saskatchewan artwork something that promotes Saskatchewan-ness; the landscape, the topography, the history, influences a lot of Saskatchewan artists, and it’s something that I’m aware of, that I’m trying to bring to the front of my work more and more, is the landscape that surrounds Regina. The flatness, some people see it as an absence, but I see it as a presence. The work that I do, the longer compositions certainly reflect the landscape in a lot of ways, intentionally, because living in Saskatchewan, we’re, in the winter months, a good five to six months out of the year, there’s a lot of darkness, and so what comes out of the darkness is something that I want to illuminate or set against that illumination. So, certainly, being an artist in Saskatchewan, I feel very influenced by, the landscape, by the territory that we inhabit.

The Western Ridge is another significant element in the design of the Secondary Plan. The ridge marks the western boundary of the planning area and its topography is elevated above both Highway 416 on the west and much of the planning area lying to the east. The remnants of the forest on the top and slopes of the ridge are important to the landscape of the community. The following are design guidelines for consideration during development approvals on lands that include the western ridge.

Northeast Queensland is one of the most farmed places in Australia. Its warm weather, topography and fertile soil make it ideal to grow crops, especially sugarcane. Over the past decades, this industry has unfortunately been responsible for massive fertilizers and herbicide run offs that wash away in the neighboring waters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. An important decrease in water quality has been reported year after year and is held partly responsible for the Reef’s current poor health.

We don’t wish to create a gated community but rather to maintain and even promote the local access and use of the site. Our first masterplan developed together with ARUP included a series of volumes stitched to the site and its varied topography. The main public functions and jetty are organized centrally and linked to the village to the north while the privatized villas and jetty are situated at the southern tip of the site. The integration and volumetric expression of the buildings was studied in terms of the relation of the building forms to the varied topography while metaphorical relationships with the island morphology were also developed. The individual “blocks”, by leaning into the hillside, became more intrinsic to the island topography while allowing for a stepped gradation of space in the form of terracing. The apartment units are directed toward the sea while anchored to the hillside by an atrium space that allows for a sequence of spatial experiences. The villas are similarly integrated into the steeper cliffs of the southern tip of the site and offer, as do the apartments, unrestricted views to the sea while maintaining lateral privacy.

Surrounded on three sides by Kenogamisis Lake, much of this park's topography was shaped by glaciers that covered the area more than 9,000 years ago. Most prominent is the long, gravel-filled esker that winds its way through the park, marking the course of an ancient glacial river.

The first thing you notice when you set eyes on Ani Villa Dikwella is its beautiful and magical location and right from the start the design was influenced by the site and its topography. The hotel is organised into small clusters of pavilions, linked by ramps and stone walls. It is these walls that really bring the whole building together, creating an almost geometrical picture in the midst of the surrounding nature. For this project, as in most of their work, AW2 made a point of integrating the natural environment into the design. The hotel reception at the highest point of the site offers beautiful ocean views.

The scanning tunnelling microscope played a significant role in this discovery. "It's unlike any conventional microscope; it doesn't have any lenses or an eyepiece that you look through," explained Wolkow. "It actually is more like a record player. It involves moving a very fine tip around and charting the topography of the surface. If you had a single atom at the end of your probe, you could chart out topography on the atomic scale."
