Non-native plant inventories will be maintained and control sites will be monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

The project was conducted from 2008 to 2010 on multiple commercial canola and dry bean farms in the irrigated region of southern Alberta. To ensure compatibility with ongoing operations, strips of commercial fields were treated with the biofungicides in addition to what a grower would normally do to manage his crop. Because this project was done under commercial conditions, there were few untreated control areas.

The evaluation revealed that the SST program was associated with a statistically significant 17 per cent reduction in violent crimes in the program areas relative to the comparison areas. A subsequent analysis of locations surrounding the program and comparison areas revealed no evidence of significant violent crime displacement. In other words, violent crime didn't simply move around the corner due to focused police attention in the hot spot areas.

)) on biogeochemical fluxes in the water column and at the benthic interface in Havre-aux-Maisons Lagoon (Quebec, Canada). Aquaculture structures increased the pelagic macrofaunal biomass (PMB) and acted as an oxygen sink and nutrient source in the water column under dark conditions. Although PMB was lower in scallop culture, the influence of scallop cages on pelagic fluxes was similar to or greater (nitrate and nitrite) than that of mussel lines. Sediments were organically enriched, and benthic macrofaunal abundances were decreased in mussel culture zones relative to the control zone, but such an effect was not observed in the scallop zone. Nevertheless, benthic oxygen demand did not vary among culture types and control zones. Benthic nutrient fluxes were greatest beneath aquaculture structures. Both pelagic and benthic interfaces may modify oxygen and nutrient pools in culture zones in Havre-aux-Maisons Lagoon. The contribution of aquaculture structures to oxygen, ammonium, and phosphate pools may be a function of PMB and type. While aquaculture structures had an important role on nitrate and nitrite cycling, silicate turnover was mainly driven by benthic mineralization of biodeposits.©2007 NRC Canada

Prescribed burning is widely used as a forest management tool; however, its long-term impacts on site productivity must be better understood to meet planned burn objectives. MacMillan Bloedel (now Western Forest Products Inc.) and the Canadian Forest Service began a study of the effects of prescribed burning on fuel consumption, tree growth and site nutrition in 1985. This paper quantifies the impacts of fires of different severity on woody debris and soil organic horizons. Three low-severity spring burns, two high-severity fall burns and two unburned controls were estab¬lished on three sites near Port Alberni, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Most of the low-severity spring burn area was accidentally reburned during an adjacent high-severity fall burn, resulting in a very high-severity burn. The major differences in impacts between spring and fall burns were greater consumption of forest floor and increased mineral soil exposure on fall burns. The reburned area had forest floor consumption and mineral soil exposure similar to those in the adjacent fall burn, but also exhibited greater large woody fuel consumption. Total slash consumption significantly increased with increasing fire severity, while consumption of forest floor, slash plus forest floor, depth of burn, and mineral soil exposure were all significantly greater on fall burns compared to those in spring burns.
