Numerous new technologies and autonomous devices (socially interactive robots, assistance robots, telepresence, ambivalent assisted living) are currently being developed and tested. These promise to provide relief, supplement services and offer support and social interaction, ensuring that mobility and independence can be retained even for those with health problems. We are investigating the opportunities and risks of these technologies, the use of technically/economically feasible and ethically desirable robotics in healthcare, and their implications and consequences.
