Work is a major contributor to living a fulfilled life, and thus to quality of life. Likewise, involuntary exclusion from the world of work generally has a negative effect on health. It is also well known and well documented that work can interfere with health for a wide variety of reasons. The question therefore arises of which conditions are required for health to stabilise and which conditions have an effect upon health. Working on the basis of the individual in all their diversity, we are investigating the conditions under which work has an effect on quality of life and the conditions under which this effect is diminished. We are also considering the factors and resources which strengthen resilience, as well as the factors and conditions which increase vulnerability. Particular attention is paid here to the interaction between workload and work resources, which promotes health and well-being in the best case scenario and causes medical conditions and illness in the worst. This is rounded out by not treating work as an isolated issue but rather considering it in interaction with spheres of life outside of gainful employment. We will be investigating conflicts and enrichment processes, in other words negative and positive carry-over effects between work and private life and their effect on health and well-being.
