It is true that it takes energy to send data from A to B and the more data are sent, the more infrastructure is needed. But we see it as our duty to ensure that the build-out of our infrastructure does not go hand in hand with rapidly rising energy consumption and with it significant increases in carbon emissions. And we do a great deal to this end and work constantly to reduce our own carbon footprint. For example, we are converting our networks to IP technology (IP= Internet protocol). In this way, data arrive at their destination faster and with less power consumption. Another example is how we are pooling our data traffic in a few, highly efficient data centers. As a result, we have managed to ensure only a very slight increase in overall carbon emissions from our data centers, despite rapidly – disproportionately – rising data volumes. What’s more, we operate one of the world’s most efficient data centers in Biere, Saxony-Anhalt. It was awarded the respected LEED Gold sustainability certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). And that is something we are proud of.

XAMODX hat im 2015 als erste mongolische Nichtregierungsorganisation (NGO) das Umweltzertifikat «Fairmined Ecological Gold» erhalten. Sie wird im Rahmen eines Projekts zur Förderung eines nachhaltigen kleingewerblichen Goldbergbaus (Sustainable Artisanal Mining, SAM) von der DEZA unterstützt. Das Zertifikat der „Alliance for Responsible Mining“ steht für einen umweltverträglichen Goldabbau ohne Einsatz von Quecksilber und Zyanid. XAMODX vertritt über 300 Goldminenarbeiterinnen und -arbeiter. Sie ist die erste NGO Asiens, die mit diesem Zertifikat ausgezeichnet wurde.

The NGO XAMODX, supported by the SDC as part of the Sustainable Artisanal Mining Project in Mongolia (SAM), is the first Mongolian NGO to have received Fairmined Ecological Gold certification. The label, issued by the international Alliance for Responsible Mining, certifies that the gold has been mined and processed in an environmentally friendly way without the use of mercury or cyanide. Since 2015, XAMODX, which represents over 300 artisanal miners has become the first organisation in Asia to receive this certification.

The GEZE solution for the Milaneo shopping centre in Stuttgart shows how we can meet these demands. 12 vestibules, each with four automatic swing doors, allow visitors to flow freely during everyday operation. In addition, emergency exit protection has also been integrated to monitor all opening and closing processes and automatically release the doors in the event of an emergency. In a fire, the doors provide natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilation: retractable arm drives push the doors open wide and keep them open. The automatic swing doors have another benefit in normal operation: they close reliably to improve the building's energy balance. The automatic doors were one of the criteria that helped the Milaneo achieve pre-certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).
