His large workshop created important tombs in Rome (including in Santa Maria sopra Minerva) and Florence (Badia), altars, and tabernacles. His portrait busts, with their virtuosic treatment of the surface and their succinct characterization of the person depicted, are of particular significance. They both stand at the beginning of this ancient genre's revival and mark its early zenith.

One of the special highlights of a trip to India is a visit to the former Mughal capital of Agra in the western part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. With the Red Fort and the Taj Mahal, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Agra is an impressive tourist highlight. The Mughal Emperor Akbar began in 1565 with the construction of the massive Red Fort. Located directly on the banks of the river Yamuna, it served as a fortress and a palace complex. The world famous Taj Mahal, the very symbol of India, is within sight of the fort. The imposing white marble building stands on a platform surrounded by four minarets in a beautiful garden with an elongated water basin. The Taj Mahal was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. The materials to construct it with were brought in from all over India and other parts of Asia. The mausoleum is considered a majestic masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture and is often described as the epitome of architectural perfection. The central dome is over 55 meters high. Visitors can admire both the grandeur of the overall design and the extraordinary details of the sculpturing, accentuated by the flower-shaped inlays of semiprecious stones. Inside are the tombs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. The quality of light at different times of day and in different seasons affects the appearance of the Taj Mahal, making it worthwhile to visit more than once.

After passing through the 18th century sacristy of the basilica – built with columns from the Villa Adriana in Tivoli – one enters St Peter’s Treasury, which contains church ornaments, statues, papal mitres and various objects, usually gifts of kings or princes. Notable pieces include the monument to Sixtus IV (1471-1484), a work by Antonio del Pollaiolo, a 15th century Florentine artist. The sarcophagus shows the Pope surrounded by the virtues and the liberal arts. Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere (later to become Pope Julius II) commissioned it in 1493.

In the settlement of Guran, northeast of Vodnjan, was a late antiquity village with a triple nave early-Christian basilica begun in the 7th century; of this church, only portions of the frescos and the altar have been found. It appears that the basilica was in function until the 15th century. The graveyard church St. Simon dates back to the 6-7th century (later adapted), with its characteristic walled graves around the church.

Vetulonia had been already a flourishing town since the 7th century, and nowadays it is famous for its Etruscan tombs (Pietrara's one, Diavolino's one, etc.) and also for the Roman quarter "Scavi di città" (town excavations) and for its Acropolis. Above the towns of "Ghiaccio Forte" (strong ice) in Scansano, of strategic importance and recently discovered, Heba and Marsiliana, you should visit the Saturnia thermal baths, already famous at Romans'time. You will find Etruscan traces in the Fiora valley, in Pitigliano, Poggio Buco (in Statonia) and Sovana, whose necropolis have been digged in the tuff. Here there are great tombs, like the "Ildebranda", in the surroounding area of the town, in an attracting landscape. On the coast, in the Uccellina Mountains and Burano lake area, traces of two civilizations meet together, the one upon the other: the Roman and the Etruscan one, in Orbetello and Talamone.

Gallo-Roman tumulus (beginning 3rd century after J.C.) at Bill. Being crossed by three major communications routes, two of which are from Lyon and Reims, towards Trier, and the third touching the northern tip of the country as it is today on its way to Cologne, and penetrated by secondary routes, the present-day Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was open to agriculture, livestock farming and the crafts practised by the Celts and their Gallo-Roman successors. There are no Roman towns or military camps, as the administrative and commercial centres of Metz and Trier were too close: the inhabitants of these centres obtained supplies from the Luxembourg regions, but also distributed the products of a more distant trade, and built villas and funeral monuments along the banks of the Moselle, the Sûre and the Alzette. Besides the estates and farms, some craft settlements or postal stopping points have varied homes, inns, workships shops and temples. During the four centuries inaugurated in 58 BC by the conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar and Labienus, the pax romana introduced the Christian faith and started the growing of vines and fruit trees, and spread the taste for Roman architecture, which gradually replaced the huts of the Treveri living in the region before the conquest by Caesar. When in 395, the praetorium prefecture of the Gauls was withdrawn from Trier to Arles, it was also the withdrawal of the Roman Empire from the lands that are now Luxembourg.

The grave monuments’ iconographic design, which is analyzed with regard to their economic aspects in the second part of the study, does not indicate a stabilization of the visual language that could have been read as the expression of a collective identity. The conceptual background of the representativeness of craftsmanship and trade is defined by the production of goods of high and verifiable quality. At the same time the trans-regional transport of goods was more important for this consideration than their actual sale. This was because not the exchange of goods for money, but the interaction with clients was of priority. The third part of the study deals with the social classification of the respective individuals. This is possible only to a limited extent: The individuals’ legal status in particular cannot be reconstructed in a conclusive manner. Their names and clothes, however, suggest that they predominantly must have been members of the local population. The grave monuments, that were highly heterogenic in their forms, indicate a claim for social prestige - among other tendencies concerning the expansion of technical demands in memorial construction in the context of commemorative culture. In many cases this claim is being combined with the characterization of the respective individual through the inclusion of prestige goods. The thus identifiable claim for prestige coincides with a tendency for an increased orientation to elements of Roman culture. Due to the lack of studies addressing political ambitions and phenomena discernable in the economic sphere, it should be assumed that internationality was established at least partially as a social value.
