Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhren lassen ein hohes Anwendungspotenzial zur adsorptions­selektiven Trennung von Gasgemischen ähnlicher Molekülgrößen (z. B. Paraffin/Olefin) erwarten. Durch die zylindrische Struktur und die große innere Oberfläche bieten Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhren ein ideales Material zur Speicherung von Gasen.
Carbon nanotubes hold great potential for adsorption-selective separation of mixtures of gases with similar molecular sizes (e.g. paraffin and olefin). With their cylindrical nanostructure and high internal surface area, CNTs are ideal materials for gas storage. The catalytic activity lends itself well to substance transformation with simultaneous substance separation.

Das PYREG-Verfahren ist auf einen Erhalt des Kohlenstoffes und der enthaltenen Nährstoffe bei mittleren Temperaturen zwischen 500 und 800°C optimiert und hat nicht wie herkömmliche Verbrennungsverfahren die vollständige Zerstörung des Brennstoffes zum Ziel. Pflanzenkohlen, die im PYREG-Verfahren hergestellt wurden, zeichnen sich durch ihre hohe Porösität und große innere Oberfläche sowie langfristige Lagerstabilität aus.
The process of carbonization itself is already known for a long time. The PYREG plant P500 however is able to maintain a clean process at optimum efficiency and at a constant quality level unachievable beforehand. Pathogens, germs and potentially harmful pollutants are neutralized. As the carbonization process is carried out as a whole, formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and dioxins is prevented. This fact represents a significant difference to conventional pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) or to methods based on wood gasifiers.

III. Kohlenstoffsondermorphologien Neben den bekannten Modifikationen des Kohlenstoffs wie Diamant und Graphit wurden kürzlich auch neuartige Strukturen wie Aerogele und Nanoröhren entwickelt. Sie zeichnen sich durch eine extrem große innere Oberfläche aus und kommen als Katalysatorträger, zur Abgasreinigung oder Wärmedämmung im Hochtemperaturbereich in Frage.
FORCARBON is investigating three areas of interest: I. Coatings from diamond and diamond-like carbon Crystalline diamond layers to protect against wear on very highly stressed structural steel members could significantly improve function and service life. It has not previously been possible to coat steel with diamond because the two materials do not bond together. FORCARBON intends to solve this problem with intermediate layers that improve adhesion. High quality diamond detectors, used primarily for medical radiation measurements, consist nowadays in natural single crystals. These are very rare in the necessary size and purity, and are correspondingly expensive. FORCARBON intends to grow the world's largest diamond crystals industrially. II. Carbon-based composite materials FORCABON is developing composite materials based on carbon having unique properties for many applications. These materials are very light and extraordinarily resistant to temperature and corrosion, therefore making them suitable as a base material for brake discs or high-performance pumps. The market for composite materials is growing rapidly, as the industry incurs high losses annually due to friction and wear. III. Special carbon morphologies In addition to carbon's familiar allotropes, such as diamond and graphite, new types of structure such as aerogels and nanotubes have recently been developed. They are characterised by an extraordinarily large internal surface, and are valuable as catalyst carriers, for exhaust fume cleaning or heat insulation in high temperature applications. Nanotubes, furthermore, can also be formed into small, stable printed conductors with low resistance, functioning almost like an electron helter-skelter, and are therefore suitable as components for the nanocomputers of the future. FORCARBON is researching the principles required for scaling up the production and further processing of these new types of carbon.

The first stage after extraction of the ore is washing it with water. In this way, most of the water-soluble impurities are removed. Then CaO, or calcium oxide, is added to such prepared raw material. Next it is crushed using special tube mills until the grains have a very small diameter, i.e. below 300 μm. It is extremely important to finely grind the raw material, as it provides a sufficiently large specific surface area of grains, which in turn translates into a more efficient process of extraction.

For more than a hundred years catalysts are used in chemical industry. According to Wilhelm Ostwald they increase the speed of a chemical reaction without being consumed themselves and without changing the final thermodynamic equilibrium of the respective reaction. Just thinking of the catalytic converter in an automobile it is evident that catalysts are an indispensable part of our everyday lives. While catalysts are often used as extrudates in large-scale processes they are applied as a wall coating in the automobile. We as well employ such kinds of wall coatings in our microstructured reactors. Their characteristic external feature is a large number of channels or cavities of which at least one dimension is in micro- or lower millimeter range. With respect to heterogeneously catalyzed gas phase reactions we normally use the large inner surface area to apply catalyst layers with a thickness of up to several ten micrometers.
