A major output of the National Marine Aquarium is its direct work with the formal education system through schools and colleges over a wide area. A cross curricula approach is taken to satisfy the needs of the UK National Curriculum whilst at the same time putting forward the aims of the Aquarium. Subjects as seemingly unconnected as literacy and numeracy are used to great effect in getting messages across. Art and drama are key elements to helping students understand the principles of science through observation. The key to the approach is to be entertaining. Without entertainment there will be no engagement; through engagement comes knowledge; with knowledge follows understanding which leads to appreciation, concern and action.

The Clem Jones Tunnel (formerly North South Brisbane Tunnel - NSBT) represents an enormous contribution to the City of Brisbane's avowed target of coming to terms with existing and future demands posed on transport and the infrastructure. This project will enable north-south through traffic to be brought together between Woolloongabba and Bowen Hills, to undertunnel the Brisbane River and create links from and to the east via Shafston Avenue at Kangaroo Point. The River City Motorway Consortium is financing the project and will supervise Operation. After a 45-year concession period is concluded the Clem Jones Tunnel will be handed over to the City of Brisbane. The total project is 6.8 km long and embraces 2 two-lane tunnels each 4.8 km long, which will considerably reduce the flow of inner urban traffic and facilitate a number of urban construction improvement measures. Including access and exit ramps a total of 10.4 km of tunnels is to be driven. Each tube, one each for northbound and southbound traffic, possesses an excavated diameter of approx. 12.40 m. Emergency exits set up 120 m apart (roughly 5 m wide and 5 m high) lead to safe zones. 3.5 mill. t of earth will be removed, 70 % of this total by means of two hard rock TBMs (double shield with 12.40 m diameter). For some years now, researchers have been working on new applications for PCMs. The phase-change material developed by BASF and the ISE Frauenhofer Institute which goes by the brand name of Micronal® consists of microscopically small plastic balls, at the core of which is a storage medium containing paraffin wax. Rising temperatures melt the wax and the heat is thus absorbed. If the temperature drops, the opposite process takes place: The wax sets and heat is released. Micronal® can be invisibly integrated into building materials such as wall plaster or building boards which can then influence the ambient climate as desired. Energy demand for air conditioners is also clearly reduced so that, on the one hand, the additional outlays for the building material will already have been recouped within five years and, on the other, a greater contribution is made to climate protection. For this reason the team of developers were nominated for “Deutscher Zukunftspreis” this year, a federal award which goes to people who have future-oriented ideas.
