The facilities are internationally competitive and offer some unique possibilities for experiments. The facilities are used annually by more than 2500 external scientists from universities and non-university research institutions around the world. At HZB highly specialized research is conducted in the area of materials sciences on topics with special requirements for large-scale facilities. The main fields of research are materials research for energy technologies, magnetic materials, and functional materials. In solar energy research, emphasis is placed on the development of thin film solar cells. Chemical fuels from sunlight is another important research topic. Roughly 1100 employees work at HZB, about 800 on the Lise Meitner Campus in Wannsee and 300 on the Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen Campus in Adlershof.

Typically our work makes use of ion beam and mass spectrometric methods – a good part of which we develop ourselves. Over the years this has allowed us to set up several unique instrumentation platforms. This has been paralleled by research into the dependence of molecular properties on overall charge. In this context, we are particularly interested in how the characteristic properties of multiply negatively charged molecules depend on electron localization. For example, we are presently studying tunneling autodetachment from electronically excited states of inorganic and metal-organic chromophore multianions using time- and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We also study how the optical properties of molecular ions change with environment by performing measurements under isolated, gas-phase conditions (using a variety of laser spectroscopic methods such as photodissociation and trapped ion laser induced fluorescence) and comparing these data to condensed phase measurements and predictions from theoretical spectroscopy.

The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) was founded in April 2002 and is a strategy forum for research infrastructures composed of representatives of the EU member states, the associated states and a representative of the European Commission. The forum’s mission is to identify and support new research infrastructures (large equipment and devices for research purposes, knowledge resources for research e.g. collections and archives and ICT infrastructures) which are necessary for the next 10 to 20 years to establish Europe as a worldwide leading place of research. For this, ESFRI published a Roadmap in October 2006 which was compiled by more than 1,000 experts. It is planned that this will be updated every two years. After the first update in December 2008, forty four projects are currently listed. The planning and organisation of the infrastructure measures listed in the Roadmap are funded by the EU through the 7th EU Research Framework Programme. The research infrastructures will be established and implemented by the relevant member states and regions. Universities and research institutes in Baden-Württemberg are involved in 13 of the 44 European projects. Exemplary projects include:
