Fontaine actually looks back over a kind of family tradition; his great uncle Jean-Paul Jérôme was one of Canada's first geometric painters and became internationally known in the mid-fifties as a member of the artists' group Les Plasticien. For Fontaine, the glitter so often associated with "queerness" in today's art establishment is more a formal means: "At first I worked with acrylic and oil, and always tried to make my colors as intense as possible. But they were never strong enough for me. With the glitter, I get this intensity of color and brilliance, and in addition an interactive aspect, because every movement on the part of the viewer changes the coloration and sense of spatial depth."

Because he came into the world with big hands, declared a great-uncle, the boy must learn the cello. This encouragement was gladly seized upon by his parents: that was the very instrument lacking for a family string quartet. And so Martin Menking began playing the cello at the age of nine, becoming a pupil of Heinrich Schiff and David Geringas and going on to win numerous prizes and distinctions. Master classes brought him into contact with, among others, Yo-Yo Ma, Boris Pergamenschikow, Janos Starker, Siegfried Palm and Isaac Stern as well as the Beaux Arts Trio and Alban Berg Quartet. In 1994 he became assistant principal cellist of the Hamburg Radio (NDR) Symphony Orchestra, and two years later joined the Berliner Philharmoniker. Menking is involved in making chamber music with his colleagues in a number of different formations, most notably the »12 Cellists«, of whom he is managing director. He finds a balance with his professional activity in nature and in sport, of which his favourite forms are swimming, jogging, badminton, windsurfing and cycling.

The best way to understand Plato’s view is to look at the most famous section of his best-known work, Republic. In “The Allegory of the Cave,” Plato created a fictional dialogue between Socrates (his mentor and teacher) and Glaucon (Plato’s great-uncle). In that conversation Socrates likens the world to a cave in which the inhabitants are chained up in such a way that all they can see is one wall directly in front of them. Behind them is a parapet, and beyond that a fire and an opening through which sunlight enters. On the parapet, puppeteers hold up puppets and other objects. The light coming from the fire and the sun casts shadows of the puppets onto the wall. The prisoners cannot turn their heads, so all they ever see are these shadows. They hear the sounds of the puppeteers and their objects echo off the walls, so that it appears the sounds are coming from the shadows. Thus the prisoners come to believe that the shadows are reality. Their understanding is, of course, misguided. As they speak to one another, the language they use to describe and discuss this misperceived reality is also deficient.
