Confronted earlier this year at the Haus der Kunst by the magnificence of Yellow, 1999, a straightforward hole in the wall, I just stood and gaped. The work invokes primitive worship. On the other hand, Turning the World Upside Down, although it was made three to four years earlier, requires a more complicated response. We cannot see the reduced image of ourselves and the reflections of the piece's surroundings at the same time; we don't instantly reconcile them, but our understanding of the piece relies on this reconciliation of the microcosm and macrocosm.

A little more than three years later, at the United Nations (UN) Summit in 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted. In the Agenda, 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) define the key areas and mech-anisms for a future global development partnership. One of these goals (SDG 11: “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”) distinctly alludes to urban development. The urban community has widely celebrated the adoption of this “stand-alone urban goal”. The step is perceived as reflecting an increased awareness of the important role of cities for global development pathways.

Reorganised areas will be moving into the new building, alongside the existing departments. These will include a new reception area with a central reception desk, an interdisciplinary outpatient clinic, an ultra-modern operating theatre area, interdisciplinary medical diagnostics and much more. A special feature of the project is that the old ward block will be demolished after completion of the new building and the refurbishment work. The new section of the building is scheduled to open as early as the end of 2019. It will take at least another three years to complete the entire HORIZONT project in Frauenfeld, which is being delivered by Steiner AG using state-of-the-art planning principles while the hospital remains operational. "Once completed, the fully modernised and extended amenities at Frauenfeld cantonal hospital will help to meet the increasing demand among the population and public authorities for efficient, first-class healthcare provision, both now and in future," Steiner CEO Daniel Ducrey affirms.
