Marcelo Sánchez, Professor für Paläontologie der Universität Zürich, und der Postdoktorand Daisuke Koyabu haben jetzt zusammen mit einem Kollegen der Universität Tübingen das Vorhandensein des Zwischenscheitelbeins doch nachweisen können: Sie haben Fossilien und Embryos von mehr als 300 Wirbeltierarten untersucht, und bei allen konnten sie den Knochen identifizieren. Zum Einsatz gekommen waren nichtinvasive Mikro-Computertomographie-Aufnahmen, analysiert hatten sie seltene Embryos unterschiedlicher Säugetierarten aus Museumssammlungen. «Das Zwischenscheitelbein war in Proben aus der Embryonalperiode deutlich erkennbar, da hier die Schädelknochen weniger stark miteinander verschmolzen sind», erläutert Marcelo Sánchez. Darin, dass der Knochen nur im Embryonalstadium klar und gut erkennbar ist, sieht er gleichzeitig den Grund dafür, dass ihn frühere Forschende nicht erkannt haben: «Scheinbar haben viele Anatomen das Vorhandensein des Zwischenscheitelbeins bei zahlreichen Säugetier-Abstammungslinien übersehen, da dieser Knochen im Verlauf des Wachstums mit anderen Schädelknochen verwächst und bei adulten Individuen unkenntlich wird.»

Together with a colleague from the University of Tübingen, Marcelo Sánchez, a professor of paleontology at the University of Zurich, and post-doctoral student Daisuke Koyabu have now detected the presence of the interparietal after all: Studying fossils and embryos of over 300 species of vertebrate, they were able to identify the bone in all of them. They used non-invasive micro-CT imaging to analyze rare embryos of different species from museum collections. “The interparietal was clearly discernible in specimens from the embryonic period as the skull bones were fused less strongly here,” explains Sánchez. At the same time, he sees the fact that the bone is only clearly and easily discernible in the embryonic period as the reason why previous researchers failed to recognize it: “It would seem that many anatomists have overlooked the presence of the interparietal in numerous mammalian lineages as the bone becomes fused to other skull bones during growth and is unrecognizable in adult individuals.”

Die Arbeiten des belgischen Künstlers Koenraad de Dedobbeleer (1975) schärfen die Wahrnehmung eines vielschichtigen Verhältnisses von Objekten und ihrer Erscheinung. Sei es eine Skulptur, die eine Skulptur ist und gleichzeitig als Sockel einer Skulptur dient. Sei es eine Fotografie, die eine Skulptur zeigt, oder besser gesagt, ein Objekt, das aufgrund seiner Anordnung als Skulptur gelesen werden kann. Seien es gefundene Objekte, die vergrößert worden sind, und sich immer noch auf ihr Original beziehen, während sie gleichzeitig eine andere Form angenommen haben. Scheinbar alltägliche Gegenstände werden von ihrem herkömmlichen Gebrauchswert befreit und erfahren durch ihre Kontextualisierung eine Neu- und Umbewertung. Koenraad Dedobbeleer konstruiert Bezüge, die sich jedoch als Wahrnehmungsfallen herausstellen. Dann wieder schafft er Objekte, deren einzelne Elemente allgemein bekannt zu sein scheinen, jedoch zu irritieren vermögen. Im Hinblick auf den jeweiligen Ausstellungsort modifiziert der Künstler meist funktionale Objekte wie Tische, perforierte Zwischenwände oder Säulen, verwendet oft auch Fotografien, Projektionen und Filme, oder einzelne Schriftelemente. Objekte und Elemente werden zu größeren Einheiten entwickelt und zu Räumen verquickt, in denen die einzelnen Teile sich gegenseitig auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen kommentieren.

The works of Belgian artist Koenraad Dedobbeleer (1975) sharpen our perspective of a multilayered relationship of objects and their appearance, in sculptures that are simultaneously sculpture and also serve as the pedestal of another sculpture, or a photograph that shows a sculpture, or better put, an object, that can be read as sculpture due to its placement, or found objects that are enlarged and refer to their original while at the same time taking on a different form. Apparently everyday objects are liberated from their standard use and undergo in their recontextualization a revaluation. Koenraad de Dobbeleer constructs references that prove to be traps of perception. He then again creates objects whose individual elements can seem generally familiar, yet are able to disturb. In light of the exhibition site in question, the artist modifies usually functional objects like tables, perforated intermediate walls or columns, often using photographs, projections, and film, or individual writing elements. Objects and elements are developed into larger units and amalgamate to form spaces in which the individual parts comment on one another on different levels.

So vieles ist anders als in unserem Alltag, sodass wir es gleich festhalten möchten. Und wir haben scheinbar genug Zeit, uns dem Fotografieren zu widmen. Aber die Mischung aus unbekannten Orten und genügend Zeit ist nicht gerade die beste Voraussetzung für gute Fotos.

When traveling I discover unfamiliar things of which I knew nothing previously. Therefore, in the morning I cannot know what I will see in the afternoon and what I might like to post. Under those conditions it is difficult for me to illustrate a trip with pictures in such a way that it makes sense for someone looking at my Instagram account. At best, I can tell a story, but sometimes the pictures just seem to be strung together without any reference to each other. Lauren (www.instagram.com/laurenepbath) solves this problem by composing detailed picture captions for her photos. You can see the proximity to a travel blog. However, the photos and the stories they tell of the travels are fundamentally different from travel reportages which were written at some later time and are then illustrated with a selection of photos chosen after the journey.
