As a result, markets could be in for a choppy ride in the coming weeks. Last Friday, the US reported GDP growth at an annual rate of 2.3% for the first quarter. This marks a slowdown relative to the previous figure – the result of a dip in consumer spending, lower business investment and a more subdued residential property market. However, that does not provide a fair view of actual economic conditions in the US. After all, the economy is ticking along at close to full employment and consumer confidence is still high. In short, the spending slowdown is a blip.
