Back in 1998, Daniel Loss and his colleague Professor David DiVincenzo proposed using the intrinsic angular momentum – or spin – of electrons as the smallest memory unit in the computer of the future, inspiring researchers worldwide to turn their attention to this field. The work being done by Loss and his colleagues makes use of the laws of the quantum universe. These laws, which are quite distinct from those governing our everyday lives, hold the key to game-changing applications – not just in computing, but also in fields such as communications technology and sensors. Several teams in the SNI network are focussing their research on these areas of quantum technology.

Peter Felfer, junior professor at the Chair of General Materials Science is often asked this question whenever he talks about steel, an area of research which he is particularly enthusiastic about. ‘Steel is of such importance that every development of this material has an enormous impact on how sustainable our society can be,’ explains Felfer. Steel has been used for centuries and in order to adapt this material to future challenges, Professor Felfer has received a Starting Grant of 1.5 million euros from the European Research Council (ERC).

Zudem bot der Anlass die Gelegenheit, den Telekommunikationsmarkt Schweiz mit den Ländern der Europäischen Gemeinschaft zu vergleichen und Bilanz zu ziehen.

"We like to deploy students as supervisors, as they obviously have much more direct access to pupils than we oldies", explains Schütze. The young man grabbed Schütze’s attention as he had supplemented his Abitur exam in chemistry with experiments which he had designed himself. That was about ten years ago. Meanwhile the young scientist has not only completed his studies; he even did his doctorate under Professor Schütze, which was so brilliant that it received an international award.

The exhibition will show five main works by the artists including two new productions: For Sterile, albino goldfish are engineered to hatch without reproductive organs, they are not conceived as animals but made as objects. An edition of 45 goldfish was produced for the artists by Professor Etsuro Yamaha in his laboratory in Hokkaido, Japan. Sensei Ichi-gō is a machine capable of producing sterile goldfish in an automated reenactment of Yamaha’s movements and actions.

In his article, Dr. Parker refers to the work of Francisco Ayala, Professor of Genetics at the University of California at Davis, who is also Director of the Institute of Ecology there. Professor Ayala cites 6.7% as the average proportion of human genes that show heterozyguos allelic variation, e.g. straight versus curly hair. On the basis of "only" 6.7% heterzygosity, Professor Ayala has calculated that the average human couple would have to have 102017 children before they would have one child which was identical to another! The rapid evolution of self-fertilization may enable the survival of a species. However, it also entails risks because the evolution of selfing is almost always irreversible – an important insight in view of the current global climate warming. Generally, the genetic changes in plant and animal species brought about by climate change might not be reversed, even if climate change could be reversed. Evolutionary organismal responses due to climate change have not yet been sufficiently investigated. In order to investigate them, Dr. Shimizu has just started a joint project with ETH Zurich and WSL (Swiss Fedeal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research) funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, to study genome-wide variation in alpine plants.
