Astronomen
hatten erwartet

These small galaxies are called ‘dark galaxies’, as they don’t have any starlight to make them shine brightly. Astronomers had expected dark galaxies to exist, because they play an important role in how they think galaxies have grown and evolved during the history of the Universe. But, until this new discovery, nobody had ever seen one.

Driever and his team made an unexpected discovery: “We expected the quantity of E-cadherin to decrease to enable the cells to migrate. However, what we actually found was that although the quantity of E-cadherin decreases, this was not the major effect of cell movement.” Driever’s team were able to show that the stem cell factor Oct4 controls the synthesis of the epidermal growth factor (EGF), which in turn controls and even speeds up the endosomal transport of E-cadherin from the cell membrane to the interior of the cell. They also found that the quantity of static E-cadherins only decreases on the cell surface.

Christoph Kolumbus und seine Mannschaft
hatten erwartet

Christopher Columbus and his crew had expected to see people native to India, or be taken to see the great leader Khan. They called the first people they saw “Indians.” They had gone ashore in their best clothes, knelt and praised God for arriving safely. From the “Indians” they learned that the island was called Guanahani. Columbus christened it San Salvador and claimed it immediately for Spain. When they landed on the island that is now Cuba, they thought they were in Japan. After three subsequent voyages, Columbus was still unenlightened. He died a rich and famous man, but he never knew that he discovered lands that few people had imagined were there.

„Wir
hatten erwartet

“We didn’t have the best of mornings, making the wrong tyre choice which wasn’t the cleverest decision on my part,” admitted the Kiwi. “We expected conditions to be best suited to the hard compound but it didn’t turn out as we thought. We had a very slight contact with a wall in SS5 (Las Minas), which usually you would get away with but we bent the suspension. We made it through and thankfully the afternoon went better. The grip was improved and the tyre choice was easier. I’m trying to do a sensible rally and our aim is to keep hold of this top-five position, which I’d see as a very good result here this weekend. There’s still a lot of tough stages still to run, and another long day ahead of us tomorrow.”

“We did expect that in the very hot conditions that some works riders would select the harder rear option, but this didn’t happen so we can’t say if this option would have performed better over the race distance. We did see many riders evaluate the hard compound rear slick earlier in the race weekend, often at a competitive race pace, but come the race all the works riders went for the softer option. The riders always want as much grip as possible from the edge of the rear tyre as they feel that having good pace at the beginning of the race is very important for the race result. With this in mind, they will use the softest slick available and find a way to manage it effectively over the race distance.

„Wir
hatten erwartet

Duesseldorf, April 6, 2017—Gerresheimer AG made a moderate start to financial year 2017, as expected. With revenues slightly down, the adjusted EBITDA margin was held level with the prior-year period. “We had expected a weaker start to the year. As in many other sectors, there has been increased uncertainty notably with regard to North America, as reflected in the current reticence among a number of our pharma customers to place orders. Nonetheless, we continue to see good growth opportunities for us in the years ahead. While systematically working at continuous productivity and quality improvements, we are adding to our product portfolio for very demanding applications,” said Uwe Röhrhoff, CEO of Gerresheimer AG.

For their study, the scientists analyzed the metabolic profiles of 14 different dissected tissues of tobacco plants, such as the floral organs, the stem, leaves, seeds and roots. We had expected that the metabolic profiles of floral organs would differ significantly from other parts of the plant. However, there were also considerable differences between the individual floral organs. The very high degree of metabolic specialization we found in the anthers of tobacco flowers came as a particular surprise, Dapeng Li, first author of the study and a PhD student at the Max Planck Institute, reports. The anthers belong to the stamens, which are considered the male parts of a flower. They contain the pollen sacs in which pollen is produced. Anthers contain specific phenolic derivatives, which have also been found in the pollen coat in previous studies. The biosynthesis of these phenolic derivatives and their accumulation in the anthers substantially contribute to the unique metabolic profile of the male reproduction organs.

In comparison with Walzer, two things may be noted. First of all: under capitalist conditions the formation of radical and external critique occurs again and again, which is obviously based on the contingency of capitalist patterns of reproduction. This always presents itself in a twofold way: on the one hand as naturally produced and on the other as socially produced and thus also imaginable in a completely different way. Secondly: this critique that comes from outside and is all-comprehensive has effects. However, it has so far not dissolved the natural coherence of capitalist society, but instead led to a higher level of exploitation and oppression, which makes it hard for the traditional forms of critique, because they are thus devalued. This was not taken into account. Horkheimer and Adorno had anticipated that in light of the tendency towards a managed world, social criticism would slip into an increasingly eccentric and marginalized position without further impact, but then they were able to note a specific effect of critique after all. Critical social theory and the protest movement did not halt the development in the direction of total integration, but certainly interrupted it. Critique was able to take over the function of delaying, to intermittently incite asynchronicity, to change the rhythm of the development and thus make time, preserving the remains of a social life that could then become the starting point for new critique. Examples of this are found in the universities or the unions. Boltanski and Chiapello continue with a Gramscian argumentation. Critique led to a passive revolution of fordist capitalism. The powerful actors absorbed both social critics and artist critics and strategically reorganized social conditions by means of this critique, so that the result in a long-term tendency is a new form of capitalist societization, of which we have seen the corporatist phase with the practice of neoliberalism in the past twenty years (cf. Demirović 2008). Boltanski and Chiapello observe the renewal of both forms of critique in this point. New forms of inequality arise through exploitation, which is now linked with exclusion from the networks of mobility and communication; and new forms of consumerism, alienation and meaninglessness arise.
