Konishiki, Akebono und Musashimaru, doch deren Dominanz war nicht zu vergleichen mit den Mongolen, die ab 2006 so gut wie alle Turniersiege unter sich ausmachten.

History Sumo is an ancient sport dating back some 1500 years. Its origins were religious. The first sumo matches were a form of ritual dedicated to the gods with prayers for a bountiful harvest and were performed together with sacred dancing and dramas within the precincts of the shrines. In the 8th century sumo was introduced into the ceremonies of the Imperial Court (Nara Period). Early Sumo was a rough-and-tumble affair combining elements of boxing and wrestling with few or no holds barred. But under the continued patronage of the Imperial Court rules were formulated and techniques developed so that it came more nearly to resemble the sumo of today. Sumo, quite naturally, was regarded chiefly for its military usefulness and as a means of increasing the efficiency of the fighting men. Later in the hands of the samurai, juijitsu was developed as an offshoot of sumo. Peace was finally restored when the different warring factions were united under the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603. Professional sumo groups were organized to entertain the rapidly expanding plebian class and sumo came into its own as the national sport of Japan. The present Japan Sumo Association has its origins in these groups first formed in the Edo Period.

Far away from the rest of the world, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, lie the idyllic islands of Hawaii. The group of islands is symbolic of life in paradise and names such as Maui or Oahu trigger a longing for freedom, nature and the sea. Hawaii is truly unique. The landscape is marked by volcanoes, an incredibly beautiful coastline and fantastic beaches lapped by the wild waves of the Pacific. Volcanic activity is responsible for a large part of the earth’s surface, but nowhere is this as evident as on the Hawaiian Islands. The islands and the lava substrate beneath the submerged reefs were all formed by a hotspot beneath the Earth’s crust, which gave rise to volcanoes. The second largest island is Maui, where the nature conservation project is based – an absolute water paradise. In the offshore bays and channels is where whales give birth to their young in winter. It is home to many manta rays, dolphins and sea turtles. At first sight, one gets the impression that the Hawaiian islands and their breathtaking endemic nature have so far been spared from the rigors of global environmental change. However – as all over our planet – the impacts of climate change and increasing other human interference in nature, endanger this sensitive ecosystem.

Die
Hawaiianer

More and more surfers started to travel overseas with the intention to get to know different countries by the search of the perfect wave. The destinations were South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and last but not least Indonesia. A lot of the most beautiful waves were breaking on spots with no civilization. On those spots the travelers have built up the first surf camps with things they could find in the nature. The surfers came often with boots and provisions to stay there for a while and surf those outlying spots.
