Radio microphones saw the light of day with the appearance of transistors, which made it possible to miniaturise these devices. At that time, the technology enabled transmitters to be produced easily in the frequency ranges from 30 MHz to 200 MHz and the first radio microphones used those frequencies, sharing the frequency bands with other users.

The aim of the Treaty of Nice was to prepare the European institutions for the next European Union (EU) enlargement. It includes provisions which can be adapted to the different potential scenarios. At the time the Nice Treaty was concluded, it was not yet possible to establish exactly which of the candidate countries would be capable of concluding their negotiations or on what date enlargement would take effect (in one wave or several).

Today, despite the efforts at harmonisation in Europe, the frequency bands allocated to the use of radio microphones are very often subject to national restrictions. European Radiocommunications Committee recommendation ERC/REC 70-03 concerning the use of short-range radio (SRD short-range devices) mentions the national restrictions for the 6 frequency bands available to radio microphones, together with the technical parameters, such as radiated power and the harmonised standards applicable in this area.

The question why they followed this practice perceived as primitive and barbaric was often at the centre of ethnological research. The ethnologists visiting the Naga in the first third of the 20th century explained headhunting with the Naga's desire to enhance the fertility and the well-being of the individual, the village, and the tribe. Christian missionaries proselytising Naga ethnic groups since the 1830s prohibitedheadhunting and the associated ritual practices. Yet headhunting continued to shape the European image ofthe Naga intensely. This image is deceiving, however, because the Naga were and are hard-working farmersfirst of all. Their songs convey a different self-perception and almost never refer to headhunting.

3. It is for this reason that historically there has been a close relationship between forms of social movements and changes in media production. This can be seen clearly in Sean Stewart’s excellent book On the Ground, which explores the connection between the development of the underground and counterculture scene and the emergence of alternative publishing in the 1960s (2011). There is a similar relationship that has been often explored in the development of radical politics in the 1970s, particularly around punk, and the rise of ‘zine production, and the use of photocopiers (2008). Likewise Jodi Dean has likewise suggested that there was a great importance played in the formation of the Bolshevik party by the necessities imposed by the running of a daily newspaper, with the intense commitments and forms of organization necessary to sustain that (2012). This is not to fall into a McLuhan-esque technological determinism where shifts in media form map directly on to and determine changes in social composition. Rather is to acknowledge that media production and social movement cultures are closely intertwined, such as that shifts between them are complicated and multilayered.
