In 1977 I was diagnosed by biopsy with chronic active liver disease. This is a terminal disease with deterioration of bodily function as the liver gets weaker and fails to filter the blood. The disease progressed slowly over the years until spring of 1993, when many things happened - none of them very good! I was working at night with developmentally disabled adults. One night a man I was working with broke his wheelchair over my back. This left me totally disabled. I could not move without being in tremendous pain - especially in my back and my legs. Also about this same time, I found a lump in my breast. I went to a doctor who performed a biopsy and said that it must be removed immediately. He scheduled the surgery. But the pre-op blood work showed that my liver enzymes were extremely elevated and, after consultation, he told me he could not operate - that I could not possibly tolerate the surgery.

During the next Wednesday evening meeting I asked for prayer in my assembly group. An elder laid hands on me and commanded the polyps to disappear. The next day I had the appointment with the doctor. She got all of her instruments ready to remove the polyps and then discovered that they were gone. She was very surprised about it, since she knew that I had had them for 4-5 years. She said, “Well, I have nothing to cut out anymore. I can’t remove what isn’t there. You can go home!!”

More than 250 potential patients lined up early on a Saturday morning outside Ernesto Torres Galdames Hospital to try to get a spot on the team’s schedule. They had come from all over Chile, including a family who had traveled from Concepción, 1,400 miles to the south. About 600 children are born each year in Chile with cleft lips and palates, and though the government established eight centers to treat those abnormalities, the long wait list means corrective surgery can lie years in the future. “The demand exceeds the supply of people to take care of the patients,” Lehman explains.
