Figure 4b) The power supply cable exits from the orbit at the lateral bony edge of the orbit of the eye and passes under the masseter muscle into the retroauricular region, where it is attached to the secondary coil. Taking a leaf from cochlear implants, the latter is surgically attached to the bone and is supplied with power for activation of the implant via electromagnetic induction by the externally positioned primary coil...."

There are numerous operations within the eye socket e.g. in the case of protruding or sunken eyes, loss of the eyeball or aplasia of the eye socket. Professor Sailer performs these operations, conducted on the walls of the eye socket, using the piezo device which works using ultrasound.

The physician is able to offer a reliable and cosmetically sophisticated concept for rehabilitation after surgical tumor therapy to his patients. This is especially important when tumor surgery means a disfiguring procedure with complete resection of the nose, the ear or the orbita. Osseo-integrated bone anchorage by titanium implants and the following prosthetic care is of great benefit for the patients with craniofacial defects.

Closely related to this problem is the surgical restoration of a fractured orbit (eye socket). This is achieved by insertion of titanium meshes that are manually bent to optimally restore the optical axis. The current state of the art of planning neglects normal asymmetries as well as soft tissue volume within the eye socket, and postoperative results are often unsatisfactory. A promising approach would be to determine the required shape of the underlying implant by optimizing the position and orientation of the eye ball resulting from the soft tissue deformation.

Meningiomas develop from “arachnoid cap cells” and are therefore strictly speaking no brain tumors. They are usually slow-growing and thereby crowd out the actual brain tissue. These tumors can also occur in the spinal canal or in the eye socket (orbit). In particular, in functionally less important areas of the brain, these tumors can often reach impressive sizes. In contrast, small tumors can already cause discomfort in critical regions. Regarding the total number of brain tumors meningiomas make up to 15% of diseases in men and 30 % in women and they occur mostly between the ages of 50 and 60 years. They affect women generally somewhat more frequently and at an older age. Typical locations are the falx (midline), the convexity of the sphenoid, the olfactory groove or the cerebellopontine angle.
