The Minuets were published in 1729 in a book entitled A general Collection of Minuets. The first edition of the “famous Water Musick”, published by Walsh round about 1732-1733, comprised only ten or so movements (i.e., approximately half the total number), drawn from each of the three suites. Other editions soon followed, as well as numerous arrangements for a wide variety of instruments (including a harpsichord reduction in about 1760). The first full edition in the form of an orchestral score was that of Samuel Arnold (1788).

Dubourg hat überwiegend Vokalmusik komponiert; seine Werke für Violine schrieb er vor allem für seine eigenen Auftritte. Sein Violinkonzert in D-Dur hat als undatierte Handschrift in der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek Dresden überlebt. Die Orchesterpartitur wurde eigens für diese Aufführung hergestellt.

Matthew Dubourg (1703-1767) was born in London, gave a guest performance as a violin virtuoso in Dublin for the first time 1724, and in 1728 took the office of “Master of the Musick attending his Majesty’s State in Ireland” at Dublin Castle, succeeding John Sigismond Cousser. He remained in this position until 1752. Among his accomplishments, he led the orchestra at the world premiere of Handel's Messiah in 1742 in Dublin. The skill of the strings in Dublin, which Handel once praised in a letter, may be traced to Dubourg's influence. Dubourg composed primarily vocal music; his works for violin were written mainly for his own concert performances. His Violin Concerto in D major is preserved today in the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB). The orchestral score was prepared specifically for this performance.

After the depressing experiences Zemlinsky had had with Der Kreidekreis, which the Nazis prohibited, he could not count on a theatre in the German-speaking world performing a new opera by him. Nevertheless in Vienna, with the help of his wife, he tried to find a new subject. In 1935, when Louise brought his attention to André Gide's drama Le Roi Candaule (1899), after some initial hesitation he decided to compose an opera based on the book and arranged the text as a libretto. He sketched the score between June 1935 and December 1936. However, he made little progress on the orchestration: the oppressive political situation paralysed his creativity and also, as he was working on the orchestration, he made extensive changes to the sketch. When the family fled from Vienna in 1938, only a good third of the orchestral score was finished.
