When South African dockworkers refused to unload a Chinese arms shipment bound for Zimbabwe, Avaaz coordinated with Southern African labor unions and the Control Arms coalition to track the shipment, connect regional groups, and rally international support for the union-led resistance. Ultimately, finding no port willing to unload the arms, China recalled the ship.

Since its beginnings in 1994 as an e-commerce pioneer selling books and CDs online, Amazon has had to continually transform itself to grow. It has not only expanded its core business by now selling almost everything from electronics to fashion to groceries, but has also evolved into new business areas. Some of those even threatened its own core business: Despite selling physical books, Amazon also introduced the Kindle and eBooks. In addition, it is threatening other businesses like Netflix and TV networks. Also, it became a leader in cloud services and hugely profitable in this field. Amazon Web Services generates annual revenues of $10 billion and margins in excess of 80 %. It is already bigger than the next four cloud service companies –  Microsoft, IBM, Google and Salesforce – combined, and is still growing at 50 % annually. Figure 1 illustrates how Amazon kept moving in new business areas over the last 10 years.

AB: I’m a sociologist; so the only definition of critique that doesn’t make me suspicious (i.e. a critique with an emancipatory effect) is a precise description of the conditions of inequality and the lack of freedom, and how this works in thought and action. If the description is accurate enough, the realization of its necessities has an emancipatory effect. The most famous historical example of such a critique is the Marxist analysis of exploitation, which has proven itself not only in “theory,” but as an accurate practical description of how labor is confined. This knowledge was reworked collectively, and then served as the basis for organized resistance to inequality, such as that offered up by socialist and anarcho-syndicalist workers movements, or more recently, consolidations of the unemployed and disenfranchised. More local examples of this critique would be the sociological research made in the 1950s-80s in France and the USA into the mechanisms of power and recognition. They make it more clear how and why professional, social, and gender interactions always have winners and losers. So, for example, Bourdieu’s sociological research is first and foremost an empirical critique of the social conditions of inequality. This knowledge loads the losers with a twofold burden: in this sense, truth, if it has been established critically, cannot help but become a problem for everyone. But it is only by making such painful experiences that the losers can discover the potential of freedom.

When monks and pro-democracy protesters filled the streets of Rangoon, Avaaz members rose in support worldwide. More then 800,000 members from every country on earth signed a petition urging China and the UN Security Council to oppose the violent crackdown by the Burmese Junta and open peace talks. Avaaz publicly delivered the message to UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, pressed officials from China, Singapore and the EU for stronger positions, and formed a 50,000 person boycott against Chevron and Total Oil for doing business with the regime.
