With his extensive oeuvre and his significant art-theoretical writings, Willi Baumeister was one of the most important German artists of Classic Modernism. During his studies with Adolf Hölzel, he first met the Oskar Schlemmer who was to become a life-long friend. The 'Mauerbilder' - panels with a wall-like relief structure, created by adding sand and putty to the paint - brought about Baumeister's international breakthrough. His oeuvre is divided into many groups of works and displays a vocabulary of form that became more and more abstract. In 1928, Baumeister was offered a chair at the Städelschule in Frankfurt; in 1930, he joined the 'Cercle Carré', and in 1931 he became a member of the artist group 'Abstraction Création'. Baumeister was ostracised as a 'degenerate' artist by the National Socialists. He then lived a secluded life, wrote, and spent his time studying prehistoric and Oriental art, which influenced his 'Eidos' pictures and 'Ideogrammes'. After the War, he resumed teaching at the Art Academy in Stuttgart.

A student who chooses the minor in Central Asian Studies must choose an empirical specialism from somewhere other than the Central Asian region. When choosing a major or minor in Classics, the empirical specialism must be a different one than European Religious History.

Elisabetta Benigni schloss 2004 ihr Studium an der Universität Rom La Sapienza an der Fakultät für Orientalistik ab und wurde dort 2009 in Islamwissenschaften und Arabistik promoviert. Grundlage ihrer 2010 veröffentlichten Dissertation ist eine diachrone Analyse der literarischen Gattung adab al-suğūn (Gefängnisliteratur) in der arabischen Literatur mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf zeitgenössischer Literatur.

Elisabetta Benigni graduated from the Università La Sapienza in Rome (Faculty of Oriental Studies) in 2004 and received her PhD in Historical and Philological Studies in the Islamic and Arab World from the same university in 2009. Her dissertation, published in 2010, is based on a diachronic analysis of the genre of adab al‐suğūn (prison literature) in Arab literature, with a particular focus on modern and contemporary literary works. Benigni is also interested in the transmission of texts, translations and cross‐influences in early modern and modern Mediterranean contexts.

Initially Egyptology was not an independent discipline in Vienna and was part of the faculty for Oriental and Indo-Germanic studies. It was limited to just two rooms on the ground floor of the main building of the University that had been newly opened in 1884. The study of Egyptian languages was of primary interest as these were associated with other North African and Near Eastern language groups. As a result of this, Egyptology developed a particularly close relationship with African Studies a relationship which endured until the institutes were separated a century later in 1979.

Following the fall of the Wall, a restructuring and reduction in staff took place. The Department of African and Middle Eastern Studies was initially integrated into the “Division of Middle Eastern and Oriental Studies and African Studies”. At the end of 1993, it was finally transformed into the “Institute of African Studies”. Subsequently a number of professors have been appointed for various areas of African Studies. In the mid-1990s a Master's course on “Small Enterprise Promotion and Training” (SEPT) was added to our portfolio.

This new kind of communication is characterized by a four-dimensional hermeneutical dialectic. First of all this is about an understanding of Europe by Europe. The inner disparities notwithstanding, Europe has - largely under the influence of factors exterior to philosophy - presented itself to non-Europeans in a unitary image. Secondly, there is a European effort to understand the non-European cultures, religions, and philosophies. The institutionalized scientific fields of oriental studies and cultural anthropology bear witness to that. Thirdly, there are the non-European cultural spheres (Kulturkreise), who now also present the way they see themselves, rather than leaving it to others. Fourthly, there is the understanding of Europe as present in the non-European cultures. This situation raises the question as to who understands whom, why and how in the best way. It may come as a surprise to Europe that in our day Europe itself has become interpretable.

Horejs herself knew that she wanted to be an archaeologist as of the age of 14. Why the fascination? “The past holds the key to the present”, says the scientist, “this seemingly banal truth becomes all the more important if the present is very complex.” For many years, her work has been focused on a time of social transformation. In the present, she also perceives many signs of change such as social tension. One more reason for her to support the humanities and social sciences. “The issues that we face today as a society concern the essence of life. The economy is not going to be able to provide answers to these questions”, says Horejs, who considers the debate about ‘luxury’ academic subjects as being very short-sighted. “Oriental studies have shown how quickly a so-called ‘luxury’ subject can become pertinent”, is the example she gives with a wry smile.
