(pug) Parrots are very charismatic and play an important role in nature conservation. Yet 30 percent of the approximately 330 parrot species in existence are threatened with extinction. Since 1600, twelve species have become extinct, most of them on islands. The small island of Praslin, one of the Seychelles, is home to a unique population of Coracopsis (nigra) barklyi, also called the Seychelles black parrot. Scientists from the University of Göttingen and the Seychelles Foundation have shown that only between 500 and 900 of these birds still exist in the wild. The results were published in Oryx, The International Journal of Conservation.

The major part of tropical forests has been destroyed by land-clearance. Today the typical vegetation consists of coconut palms, cinnamon trees and ornamental plants. One plant should be mentioned separately though: the Seychelles coconut. Its fruit can reach a total weight of up to 26 kg (!) and is considered as one of the heaviest fruits in the world. The Seychelles are home to many rare and endemic rare birds like the Chatham rail or vasa parrots. Besides that you can find a unique biodiversity underwater and there species of endemic turtles, which will be the main focus of you project. Big mammals are not naturally occurring here.

At daybreak we take the boat to the big macaw clay lick in Blanquillo. From a platform we have an excellent view to observe flocks of colourful macaws (Ara chloroptera, - macao), parrots and parakeets congregating to eat the clay, which is essential for their digestion. Looking through our spotting scope we can see every detail of the birds. Breakfast at the blind. Later we explore some of the trails in Blanquillo to see more species of monkeys and birds. After lunch we visit Camungo oxbow lake: here we take a wooden catamaran to observe Giant River Otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) and different varieties of birds. Nearby we have the opportunity to climb a 42 m observation tower to get a great canopy view and observe birds, such as toucans. In the afternoon we travel upstream to return to Maquisapayoj. After a short break at the lodge we walk about 1 ½ hours through primary rainforest to the mammal salt lick of the reserve. To have the best chance to observe animals - especially the tapir - we spend the night on an elevated platform (with mats and mosquito nets). Your guide will help spotting the tapir with a light. If you prefer you can sleep in double rooms at the lodge.
