The Paderborn University BSP (PUB) library is a powerful C-library for running parallel programs in the bulk-synchronous (BSP) fashion on diverse types of parallel machines - ranging from classic, monolithic parallel machines to PC clusters. Such a PC cluster may be heterogeneous with respect to both hardware and availability; especially, PUB is able to deal with continuously fluctuation computing power, so that parallel computations can be executed in a cheap way using only the idle-times of a Linux-based workstation cluster instead of a parallel machine. Each time the availability of a PC changes during the execution of a parallel program, the schedule is optimized using process migrations. In contrast to other such approaches, our implementation does not consist of additional Linux kernel modules or patches and can thus be installed and used without admin priviledges, which means both an increase of security and an ease of maintenance at the same time.

Depending on the application, the performance of the CPU can be increased by an order of magnitude. As head of the new research group “Scientific Computing” (SCO) at HITS, Alexis and his students develop methods and tools to reconstruct and post-process evolutionary (phylogenetic) trees. He also works on designing dedicated computer architectures for reconstructing phylogenies. Moreover, he is responsible for the new parallel (super-) computer system that is currently being installed at HITS and shares his expert knowledge in parallel computer architectures and parallel programming with the other five HITS research groups. At present, ten scientists and system administrators form part of SCO. In 2011 additional PhD students, PostDocs, and visiting scientists will join the group to establish a strong research program in computational molecular evolution.

In quantum physics, systems do not exist in a clearly defined state (as in 0 or 1), but in the form of a superposition. Quantum computers use these physical phenomena to process data, and are thus considerably more powerful than classic parallel computers. Security in many widely-used asymmetric encryption systems is based on the fact that with today’s computers it is impracticable to break down a large number into its prime factors. However, already in 1994, Peter Shor published an algorithm that can swiftly solve this factoring problem with the help of a quantum computer. So quantum computers could be used to crack currently used encryption systems in the shortest time.

In stellar dynamics the structure, dynamics and mass distribution of stellar systems are investigated. This ranges from planet formation, evolution of star clusters, the Milky Way and other galaxies, to cosmological topics. Beside the realisation and data interpretation of observations, numerical simulations of the evolution of stellar systems are in the foreground. The ARI has comprehensive experience with parallel computing; computer networks are used in the numerical simulations, which are additionally provided with special hardware for the computation of many gravitational interactions (GRAPE-Boards). A new 64-processor parallel computer was just built up, as part of the projects GRACE (Volkswagenstiftung) and SFB439 .
