The newly-developed data analysis methods extend the spatial volume to which the search is sensitive by a factor of about 200. The probability of detecting gravitational waves from rapidly rotating neutron stars is increased by the same factor. As part of the MOMOS project, partial discharge phenomena occurring in equipment in electricity grids shall be analysed using a multiphysics approach. This shall also extensively incorporate the knowledge and experience gained from plasma technology, which among other things is concerned with gas discharges in a similar parameter range. For the determination of plasma parameters, like e.g. temperature and composition, combination of complementary OES methods, like e.g. analysis of atomic and ionic line radiation is applied as a general solution approach, allowing for the study of broader spatial regions and extended temporal ranges. High-speed camera based tomographic reconstruction is applied for the measurements on non-symmetric arcs. Absorption spectroscopy using appropriate light sources is a suitable method for study of colder plasma regions and arc surrounding gas.

We investigate self-organized pattern formation in a single-mirror feedback experiment [8]. The first pump beam is directly obtained from the laser source and focused into the photorefractive crystal. The second beam is created by reflecting the original pump beam off the external mirror. Diffraction of the beam propagating to the mirror and back is responsible for the spatial coupling neccessary for the generation of transverse patterns.

Regarding material modeling the institute relies on a modern material testing laboratory. For example, the determination of isothermal cold and hot flow curves with a constant strain rate is possible. Furthermore, the facilities provide the identification of kinetics of recrystallization, recovery and grain growth as well as boundary conditions (friction, heat transfer, radiation) and the physical simulation of forming processes in several steps. These experimental potentials are the basis for the development and FEA implementation of sophisticated microstructure models during and after hot forming, based on phenomenological and metal physical approaches.

The Viennese research group, in collaboration with researchers from Moscow state university, has now identified conditions which lead to self-compression and an extremely high peak power without causing the beam to collapse into filaments. “As it turns out, we are dealing with two different length scales”, says Valentina Shumakova. “The length scale of the unwanted filamentation is longer than the length on which self-compression occurs. Therefore, it is possible to find a parameter regime in which the pulse is compressed but filamentation does not yet set in.” The power of the lase pulse is 10,000 times higher than the filamentation threshold – and still it does not collapse.

Located at the Helmholtz Institute Jena are two laser systems, JETi200 and POLARIS, with which the Laser Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA) mechanism can be investigated. While both lasers currently operate at peak powers near 200 TW, their differing pulse parameters (e.g., duration and energy) allow LWFA experiments to be explored in different regimes. The JETi200’s 17 fs pulse duration and 4 J energy on target are well suited for reaching the “bubble”-regime of LWFA, where a strongly non-linear plasma wave is driven which subsequently accelerates electrons to “modest” kinetic energies of several hundred MeV to a few GeV. In comparison, POLARIS’ longer pulse duration of just under 100 fs, and higher pulse energy of 17 J will enable electron bunches to be accelerated to several GeV of kinetic energy. Empirically, the generation of electron bunches with several GeV kinetic energies has relied on coupling the laser pulses into a wave guiding structure; in this case, a capillary made from sapphire is used. By filling the capillary with hydrogen gas and discharging a high-voltage through the capillary, the hydrogen gas is ionized and plasma is formed. Plasma heating at the nanosecond timescale then creates a parabolic density profile of the plasma, and with properly selected system parameters the natural diffraction of the focused laser beam is suppressed in the plasma-based wave guide allowing the laser pulse to propagate over centimeter-long distances without significant changes in its focal spot size. This guiding of the laser pulse allows the laser’s intensity to remain high over longer distances, so that the plasma wave, central to LWFA, can accelerate electron bunches to even higher kinetic energies.
