The novel intermediate state could also be interesting for the physics of quark-gluon plasma. Fractions of a second after the Big Bang, all the matter in the universe was in a non-equilibrium state of quark-gluon plasma. Today, quark-gluon plasma is created in large particle colliders. These plasma experiments showed that certain aspects of the plasma tend towards a thermal equilibrium much faster than one would have assumed. To explain this, “Pre-Thermalization” was postulated in a theoretical framework developed at Heidelberg University. Scientists speculate that this could be linked to an intermediate state, similar to the one discovered in the ultracold atom clouds at the Vienna University of Technology.

The research group Experimental Astrophysics resides at the Institute for Applied Physics at the Department of Physics (FB 13) of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. Experiments in nuclear astrophysics are the research focus of the group, in particular the puzzle of the origin of the elements. Most elements were and still are produced during the different stages of stellar evolution. A detailed understanding of the nucleosynthesis processes allows deep insights into the stellar interiors, which are not possible otherwise. One of the requirements is the quantitative knowledge of a number of nuclear reactions under stellar conditions.

Der Saar-Lor-Lux Bachelor-Studiengang (oder kurz: SLLS-B) beginnt für alle Studierenden, d.h. auch die Deutschen und Luxemburger, an der Université de Lorraine in Nancy. Hier werden die Grundkenntnisse der Physik gelehrt: In den Experimentalphysik-Vorlesungen werden klassische Mechanik, Elektrodynamik und Thermodynamik behandelt. Die theoretischen Ergänzungen und die Mathematik-Vorlesungen liefern dazu den erforderlichen mathematischen Hintergrund sowie wichtige mathematische Grundlagen für das weitere Studium. Übungen und Praktika helfen, die gelernten Inhalte besser zu verstehen und praktisch nachzuvollziehen. Als Nebenfach absolvieren die Studierenden Vorlesungen und Praktika in Chemie. Im zweiten Jahr wechseln die Studenten nach Luxemburg, wo die Grundlagen des ersten Jahres vertieft werden und zugleich in die "moderne Physik" des 20. Jahrhunderts in Experimentalphysik und Theorie Vorlesungen behandelt wird.

The Saar-Lor-Lux bachelor's programme (SLLS-B) begins its first year at the University of Lorraine in Nancy for all students. In the first year, students learn the basic knowledge of Physics, which consists of Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics and Thermodynamics. Courses in Mathematics and complementary theoretical studies provide the necessary mathematical background and foundation. Exercise classes (TD) and practicals (TP) provide better understandings through application and practice. "Every physical theory is provisional,” says Professor Johann Kühn of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at KIT. “Our conception of the smallest particles and the forces acting between them—the Standard Model—has some loose ends,” stresses the spokesperson for SFB TR9. This model cannot describe the conditions immediately after the Big Bang, nor can it explain why, practically speaking, only matter—and not antimatter—exists in the universe today. “With our calculations, we aim to make precise predictions for experiments at the new particle accelerators.” This should allow for the smallest deviations from the Standard Model to be found, which could in turn pave the way for a comprehensive theory. This is similar to how the precise determination of the positions of stars during a solar eclipse in the year 1919 demonstrated that the sun deflects starlight ever so slightly, which proved Einstein’s theory of relativity. Kühn expects that physicists will be looking beyond the borders of the Standard Model within the next five years.
