The reduction in displacement of internal combustion engines in order to reduce fuel consumption while maintaining the same power requires more and more effort and is nevertheless subject to physical limits. Furthermore, regularly occurring driving phases that put a heavy load on the drive system actually require oversized engines to be installed. This is where the researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT came in: “Our new high-performance rechargeable batteries are only used when brief power peaks occur and therefore allow smaller and more efficient internal combustion engines to be used.” This is how Dr. Andreas Würsig, deputy director of the Integrated Energy Systems department at Fraunhofer ISIT, explains the motivation behind the development of the new system.

Plasma propulsion system is a reaction engine, which uses electric power and plasma as a means to generate the thrust. Conversely, chemical propulsion relies on chemical reaction for the same purpose. Interestingly, both engines use the same Newton’s third law as their fundamental operating principle. Chemical propulsion, while being the mainstream technique, has a physical limitation in the velocity of the exhaust gases and, respectively, the maximum speed a craft can achieve. In addition, its equivalent of ‘fuel economy’ (called ‘specific impulse’ by rocket scientists), is somewhat low. Plasma propulsion engines, while having only a modest value of thrust, can deliver it for a very long time and have much better fuel efficiency. Plasma thrusters can propel spacecraft up to the impressive speeds of 50 km/s (180 000 km/hour).

Some years ago, computers had a single core which often led to problems: computers often were overheated. Most of today's consumer electronics proudly boast a "dual core" or "quad core". However, in time the technology will come up against the same physical limits. To overcome this physical limit, a solution was found with the multicore technology, here the same chip includes several processors which share tasks: Researchers at EPFL in Lausanne and its partners developped 3D microprocessors cooled from the inside through channels as thin as a human hair filled with a liquid coolant. These processors are 10 times more powerful with as many transistors per cubic centimetre as there are neurons in the same volume of a human brain - a unctional density greater than ever before.
