Der Pädagoge, Mathematik- und Physiklehrer Martin Wagenschein arbeitete zu Beginn seiner Berufstätigkeit bei Paul Geheeb an der Odenwaldschule. Aus dieser Zusammenarbeit entwickelte sich eine lebenslange Freundschaft mit Edith und Paul Geheeb-Cassirer.
The educational theorist and math and physics teacher Martin Wagenschein worked with Paul Geheeb at the Odenwaldschule at the beginning of his career. A lifelong friendship between Wagenschein and the Geheebs developed out of this cooperation.

Schon als Kind war Ommer auf Naturwissenschaften gepolt. Sein Vater war Physiklehrer, als Neunjähriger schrieb Ommer seinen ersten Programmcode. Die elfte Klasse übersprang er. Heute arbeitet der junge Juniorprofessor häufig mit Forschern aus anderen Disziplinen.
Even as a child, Ommer was interested in the natural sciences. His father was a physics teacher, and Ommer wrote his first programme code as a nine-yearold. He skipped eleventh grade. Today, the young Junior Professor often works with researchers from other disciplines. He wants to develop new approaches in computer science to help colleagues advance their research while solving problems in his own discipline. “By now, many people have realised that together we can overcome disciplinary boundaries.”

Auch als er später Physik und Mathematik vertiefte, war dies immer noch sein Ziel. Von seinem Physiklehrer inspiriert, entschloss er sich nach Abschluss der Schulzeit technische Physik in Poznań zu studieren und hat dies nie bereut.
Jan Nowakowski was born and grew up in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He became interested in science early on. In lower secondary school, he chose biology, in order to achieve a better understanding of nature. Later he turned his focus to physics and mathematics, with the same goal in mind. Inspired by his physics teacher, after finishing school he decided to study technical physics in Poznań – and has never regretted it. “Whereas at school there were some subjects I didn’t really like, at university everything was exciting and interesting. I enjoyed those five years a lot,” Jan Nowakowski recollects. Even while still working on his degree, he was looking beyond the boundaries both of physics and of his home country. He completed an internship in Germany and was keen to write his master’s thesis there. His university agreed to this, but his prospective supervisor in Germany fell ill and the plans came to nothing. Together with his wife Sylwia Nowakowska – whom we introduced in our April 2015 issue – he searched online for alternatives. A job advert posted by Professor Thomas Jung caught the couple’s eye. After a few e-mails and phone calls, it was clear what their next step should be.

In Jena geboren und aufgewachsen, beeinflusste ihn nach eigenen Worten der Besuch der Jenaplan-Experimentalschule, einmal Wissenschaftler zu werden. Vor allem der Physiklehrer kann so viel Begeisterung vermitteln, dass nicht nur Wolfrum, sondern auch noch die halbe Klasse später Physik studiert.
As a student, Wolfrum met the renowned physicist Friedrich Hund, the discoverer of Hund’s rules. Hund gave him a piece of advice that would stay with him throughout his entire life as a researcher: “Focus on a scientific frontier area; there is always something happening there.” Wolfrum soon crossed the first, though small frontier: the physicist habilitated in physical chemistry and in 1982 became the chair of physical chemistry at the University of Heidelberg where he would research and teach for more than 25 years. “Heidelberg seemed to be perfect because there I had the possibility to work on an interdisciplinary level. I could also talk with mathematicians if I wanted to,” added Wolfrum cheekily. In addition, he was also fascinated by the spirit of the city where world renowned researchers such as Bunsen, Kirchhoff, Bodenstein, Kossel and Meyerhof had worked. Wolfrum: “To study in the same city as these renowned researchers is very exciting, even 100 years later, and the city attracts many researchers, including me.”
