The symbol of Gran Canaria, el Roque Nublo, stands here in Tejeda. This is an enormous basalt monolith of over seventy metres in height, which was formed by volcanic action during the Pleistocene Era. Beside it, to the north-west, is another monolith called El Fraile (the monk), as it looks like a praying monk. If what you really want to see is the natural beauty of the municipality, take an excursion to the Inagua and Ojeda pine forests and, a bit further north, to Los Pechos. The views are magnificent from here as they are from almost anywhere in the municipality, which is the geographical centre of the island.

3D scanning helps preserve information about the shape of a sample. Even fossils that look strong can disintegrate, especially if they are exposed to sunlight, wind, rain and fluctuating temperatures in the field. And even if an object is stored in a museum, it can still fall apart due to humidity, unfavorable temperatures and other destructive conditions.

This will tap into an immense reserve of fresh water lying around 500 metres under the Disi desert that was formed drop by drop since the Pleistocene glaciations era. This reserve contains enough drinking water to supply Amman for some fifty years. At present, this precious resource is pumped mainly for irrigation purposes in the middle of the desert, sometimes for very water-intensive crops such as citrus fruit, bananas and tomatoes.

It is often said that women are generally superior to us men: They are more intelligent, better at expressing their emotions, better at driving, at managing money and at mental arithmetic. They are more empathetic and better at multitasking. They are also said to possess a much stronger sense of taste and smell. Compared to them, men are grunting beasts in the realm of sensory perception. We are as delicate and sensitive as creatures from the Pleistocene. One of my friends, an architect, adheres to this a way of thinking. Said friend does not just love constructing large buildings, but is also a great aficionado of Bordeaux wines, and as such possesses an excellently stocked wine cellar. He is utterly convinced of the superiority of women when it comes to describing wines. I knew this, and so boned up on some of the jargon before our visit. This way, I would be better able to express what I was going to be experiencing later. I memorized “privet hedge,” “beeswax” and “opulent” – all words you may want to use when talking about wine. I was going to plunge my nose into the glass to announce: “Ahhh, I’m getting gingerbread and dates. Incredibly masculine and fleshy, but with a hint of Buffalo Bill’s leather saddle straps.” This, although I was not entirely sure that Buffalo Bill had ever actually used a saddle.

Sand brought in by the tide formed the dunes. When dry, the sand is moved by the wind forming large masses of sand. The sand is mainly of organic origin: in other words, formed by seashell and algae fragments. Sand deposit is due to the existence of a wide alluvial plain formed in the Pleistocene Era by the matter flowing down the canyon of Fataga. During the Quaternary period, the rise and fall of the sea level formed paleobars (large linear accumulations of marine pebbles), which indicate ancient sea levels. The 4 km² dune fields were formed in this manner.

The scientists were struck by the huge number of large animals, world, became extinct in the Pleistocene (between thirty and ten thousand years ago). They called this phenomenon the "extinction of the megafauna". But most striking was that, when he passed this information with archaeological data, is found on every continent extinctions coincided with the arrival of Homo Sapiens. For many, the man caused the extinction of large mammals and meek. Some scientists were even further; explained that the migration of man worldwide was due to the ongoing search for easy prey. Perhaps this was what attracted the first Aborigines to the land of the milodones. Slugs and meaty ideal were hunting the hunters. Perhaps milodones persecuted to extinction.

Human use of many other resources is similarly peaking. The amount of water needed for the average diet has declined by nearly 25 percent over the past half-century. Nitrogen pollution continues to cause eutrophication and large dead zones in places like the Gulf of Mexico. While the total amount of nitrogen pollution is rising, the amount used per unit of production has declined significantly in developed nations.

At the foot of the hill loess was accumulated, but it can also be found in smaller amounts close to the hilltop. The powdery yellow substance of the loess formed in the Pleistocene (in the Ice Age) is actually dust sedimented from the air, coming from the north European mountains and worn by the glaciers. Geologists say that the Nagyharsány block, the one that elevated the fastest, cannot have a full loess cover, because the elevation took place just at the time of the loess formation.

As you round the bend you will see the most memorable dripstone that astonishes with its shape. It is the Monomakh's Cap. It was here, over the Monomakh's Cap, where the passage led the speleologists to the large collection of bones of vertebrate animals of the late Pleistocene.

As an active participant in the Deep Sea Drilling project, he then transferred these results to former periods in Earth history, especially the Tertiary and the Pleistocene with its transition to modern times.

The island of Tenerife is a huge volcanic edifice almost 7,000 m in height, including its sub-aerial and underwater parts. Teide National Park, which covers nearly 19,000 hectares, holds an endless number of geological edifices, among which the most notable are the 17 square kilometres of the Cañadas caldera and the strombolian volcano that forms the Pico Viejo-Teide system, the only stratovolcano in the archipelago. It was created in the Pleistocene and is still active today, as evidenced by its fumaroles and historic eruptions.

The drilling also produced geological and geomorphological consequences for the constitution and the conservation of the "Mengener Brücke". Contrary to the expectation that it consists of a core of solid rock, the bedrock of loess is formed by lacustrine and fluvial Pleistocene unconsolidated rocks. Because of the low located fluvial sand the "Mengener Brucke" is a loess trap in the wind shadow of the "Tuniberg". The "Mengener Brucke" is located in the marginal deep between the Pleistocene-Holocene gravel fan of the "Dreisam" in the north and the "Möhlin-Neumagen”-system in the south. Here the fluvial-lacustrine and later on the aeolic sedimentation have presumably been lasting since the old- or middle Pleistocene. However, on the edge of these facies no sedimentation at all but frequent erosion has taken place; the fluvial sedimentation of crystalline unconsolidated rock of the Black Forest in the gravel-fan-facies has lasted until the Holocene.
