One of the legends dealing with the origins of painting is the story related by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis historia.1) It concerns a young woman from Corinth who drew the outline of the shadow cast by her lover onto a wall before he had taken leave of her. Painting consequently derives from the realm of light and shadow. From classical antiquity to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries – for example The Corinthian Maid or The Origin of Painting (1782–84) by Joseph Wright of Derby, the paintings of William Turner and the Impressionists – to the present day, light has been seen as the foundation of painting.

Reopened in May 2016, Villa Pliniana is a magnificent palace originally built in 1576, nestled in 18 acres of private lakefront in Torno – a small village on the eastern shore of Lake Como. The name comes from Pliny the Elder, who first mentioned this place in documents dating from the first century B.C. because of the spring which still flows in the central courtyard of the villa, goes down through one of the apartments and then leads to the Lake. For centuries, naturalists such as Leonardo da Vinci, musicians like Rossini and poets like Percy Shelley stayed and wrote about it. It is now featured on the pages of glossy magazines thanks to the restoration guided by Patricia Urquiola and the management of Il Sereno Hotel. The villa can be rented for special events and includes 19 luxurious bedrooms, 3 independent villas, a lake view SPA and the ability to accommodate up to 500 guests – like those that attended Bruno Mars’ private concert last summer… Mark Zuckerberg included.

At the end of the 16th century, iconology became more widespread, with artists’ repertoires expanding to include symbols, allegories and personification. While Cesare Ripa and his disciples supplied some examples of nudity and nursing (see box), it was not until the 17th and 18th centuries that one area in particular became increasingly popular: Roman charity. Derived from Pliny the Elder, an ‘ancient’ version of the theme of Charity as a theological virtue(12), this episode was a form of glorification of filial piety: Cimon, an elderly Roman man incarcerated and sentenced to death by starvation, is kept alive by the daily visits of his daughter, Pera, who secretly breastfeeds him(13). In Bachelier’s portrayal, in contrast to the frequent tradition of depicting Pera casting nervous looks in the direction of the prison guards out of the picture(14), her posture evokes that of a concerned mother leaning over her infant. Perhaps it was this ambiguity that secretly horrified the French art critic Denis Diderot, even if he pretended otherwise. In any case, he did not hesitate to criticise it harshly(15). Despite the strong symbolic nature of the painting, which transformed breastfeeding into a sacrifice of the self and of life in general, capable even of traversing generations, it did not find favour in Diderot’s eyes.
