Germany is in a position to save 43 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, compared to 1990 levels. This is the outcome of the Policy Scenarios V – towards a structural change; Greenhouse Gas Emissions Scenarios up to 2030 study, which commissioned by UBA to a research consortium associated with the Öko-Institut. By 2030, that figure could reach a nearly 60-percent reduction over 1990.

In the longer term, we want to use such a model to assess the indirect effects of climate change on international migration, under different policy scenarios. So far, modeling approaches have been developed for studying direct effects of climate change on internal migration, and partly also migration between countries. However, these are region-specific and do not allow studying indirect effects, such as shifts in bilateral income differences due to spatially heterogeneous climate damages; nor can they be generalized to apply to other countries and regions. Thus, there is so far no model that enables a synthesis of international migration flows. Our model will address this important research gap, and in the longer term, should enable a comprehensive quantitative assessment of migration under different climate and policy scenarios. For example, it could be used to study whether, to what extent, and through what mechanisms environmental crises not only emerge as a symptom of globalization, but also as a driver of cultural globalization.

Das Projekt, welches in Kenia, Senegal und Äthiopien durchgeführt wird, zielt darauf ab, die nachhaltige Landwirtschaft auf nationaler, regionaler und globaler Ebene politisch zu stärken. Dabei werden mit dem iSDG Modell, ein auf systemdynamischen Modellierungen basiertem Instrument, langfristige und integrierte Politikszenarien simuliert.

At a Side Event on 12 July 2016 at the UN in New York held during a meeting of the High Level Political Forum – the UN‘s central platform for the follow-up and review of Agenda 2030 – Hans Herren gave a presentation on the Biovision Project “Changing Course in Global Agriculture” (CCGA). This project will play a crucial role in achieving SDG 2 – End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Located in Kenya, Senegal and Ethiopia, the project is designed to strengthen political support for sustainable agriculture at the national, regional and global level. It uses the iSDG model, a modelling tool based on system dynamics that simulates a range of long-term, integrated political scenarios. The various scenarios are then discussed at Multi-Stakeholder Workshops attended by those involved in food systems. The resultant recommendations are then submitted to the relevant government. In addition, the project involves extensive capacity building, e.g. the development of a master’s course at ENSAE, the Ecole Nationale de la Statisque et de l’Analyse Economique in Senegal.
