The 200-year-old manor house is the second-oldest building in Mahlsdorf after the medieval village church. Here at the south-easternmost tip of the Mahlsdorf Feldmark, Frederick the Great, King of Prussia is supposed to have said to settler families from Württemberg in 1753: “Na kiek er mal, das wird wohl langen für euch!” (Well, just look at it; this will do well enough for you). And that’s how the place got its name. There are even today some residents of Mahlsdorf, who still claim that they come from “Kiekemal”. The Kiekemal colony was the core of the settlement that was subsequently swallowed up in the settlement area as it steadily increased in size. Nevertheless, there’s still a Kiekemaler Straße and a Kiekemal School here.

This is also where on 18th March 1928 a certain Lothar Berfelde was born. Even as a child he felt pleasure in being a girl, and later a woman – but not in the manner of a transvestite resplendent with all kinds of glitter, but a simple, unassuming woman. And in this manner, Lothar first became “Lottchen” and subsequently Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a maid clothed in black with white hair. Immediately following the end of the Second World War, she began to collect historical ordinary everyday objects from the ruins of the bombed out houses and apartments. Soon after, she started offering tours of the manor house at Hultschiner Damm 333, which was originally built in 1815. In 1960 the passionate collector, then only 32-years-old, opened the Gründerzeit Museum in the manor house, which in the following years became a centre of the gay movement in East Germany.
