Down on the intersection people scurry like ants. Gangnam, the famous district in the city of 10 million, is where Seoul’s reputation as a hipster hotspot started. The rise of K-Pop began here in the mid-90s, culminating in 2012 with the global hit “Gangnam Style” by Psy. Across Asia, North and South America and the Arab world, K-Pop girl and boy groups, plastic-surgery enhanced from head to toe, like Girl’s Generation or Big Bang, have fueled Hallyu – Korean Wave. The skyscrapers and flashy shop windows in Gangnam reflect the economic miracle that has made South Korea one of the key industrial nations in the world.

Wie viele andere Werke in der Ausstellung zeigt auch Kennedy in Berlin, dass die Nachkriegszeit einen kulturellen Wendepunkt markiert: Die Vormachtstellung westeuropäischer Kunsthauptstädte wie Paris oder London wird gebrochen, in den westlich geprägten Ländern dominiert der Einfluss der amerikanischen Kunst und Populärkultur. Dieser Prozess beginnt mit dem Siegeszug des Abstrakten Expressionismus, der nicht zuletzt einen Gegenentwurf zum Sozialistischen Realismus der Ostblock-Staaten darstellt.

Like many other works in the exhibition, Kennedy in Berlin also shows that the post-war era marked a cultural turning point: the predominance of Western European capitals such as Paris and London came to an end, while the influence of American art and pop culture dominated western and western-oriented countries. The process began with the victory of Abstract Expressionism, which also acted as a counter-proposal to the Socialist Realism of the Eastern Bloc. Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Jackson Pollock would inspire the artists of Art Informel in France and Germany as well as the Japanese artists' group Gutai. In the exhibition section titled Form Matters, Postwar demonstrates the transnational character of this decidedly non-geometric, "free" version of abstraction. A generation later, this expressive approach was further radicalized: artists as diverse as Carolee Schneemann, Hermann Nitsch, Niki de Saint Phalle, Tetsumi Kudo, and Shigeko Kubota began combining gestural painting with experimental body performances. The exhibition, jointly curated by Okwui Enwezor and Ulrich Wilmes of Haus der Kunst and the American art historian Katy Siegel, seeks to make these parallel developments visible across countries and continents.

Philosophiegeschichtlich hinterlässt das Ende des idealistischen Paradigmas einerseits ein Vakuum, das den Siegeszug des Naturalismus seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ermöglicht.

The key assumption of the project is that a metaphysics of the humanum, such as it is presupposed by the notion of a general dignity of man and his right to cross-cultural universality, cannot dispense with these idealistic thought resources. At the same time, with the programme of an enlightenend Christendom as founded by Kant, in which the absolute is conceived as a loving all-encompassing entity out of the self-conception of the autonomous moral subject, the age of German idealism offers an alternative to the classical theological paradigm of a world transcendental creator deity that is of utmost religious philosophical significance. In view of contemporary debates on the possibility of universal norms, on the one hand, and of the criticism of the three large monotheistic religions’ potential for violence, on the other hand, the a priori rationalism of autonomous self-determination as it conjoins with the idealistic programme of a “religion within the limits of pure reason” will be described comprehensively, and its systematic relevance for the substantiation of universal, i.e. cross-culturally and cross-religiously valid normativity will be recognised.
